BRIGHT SCORING
SOUTH AFRICAN TEAM. WORCESTER’S POOR DISPLAY. OPENING PERFORMANCES., (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received May 3, 9.45 a.in. LONDON, May 2. The cricket match between Worcestershire and the South African team was commenced to-day. The home side batted first and were all out for 90 runs, South Africa compiling 351 runs. Stumps were then drawn. The outfield was soft, but the wicket had been covered and was surprisingly fast and tricky. In the first hour Crisp and Bell were bowling very well; the latter’s inswingers were destructive. Later, Crisp, who is the faster bowler, had a lively spell with damaging offbreaks. In the last two overs he took five wickets for none.
Waiters alone looked at ease. The Worcester batting was most feeble and rather flattered the visitors, who had a taste of similar medicine, Perks’s fast halls from the pitch clean howling two African stars. . before lunch, after which the opposition was stouter, Nourse producing pertect cover-drives. Worcester were out in under two hours. The bright hatting in the opening stages ended when Bell bowled Gibbons. Fifteen runs later Walters played on. Martin was out first ball, but Howarth saved a hat trick, although he was narrowly missed in the slips. . . Crisp quickly took six wickets, including Human and Warne, in one over, and Parks, Buller, and Jackson in the next without runs. Crisp’s figures were 92 —34—6. The South Africans started poorly. Wade was out fifth hall. Siedle went leg-before, duo to Lyttelton’s trap, lhe new leg-beiore rule was not involved. Rowan and Nourse were associated in a fine partnership which, although unspectacular, revealed complete confidence on the part of the batsmen in their first English match. they attempted all the possibilities. Nourse, who was dismissed leg-before, was similarly trapped in *-tempting to hit a straight hall to square-leg. He hit one G and six 4’s. Cameron sparkled reminiscent pi Jessop. Ho hit three successive 6’s and completed 50 in 45 minutes. Dalton gave a good display, chiefly drives. He hit eleven 4's.
