ST. PATRICK’S WIN BRENNAN CUP. The St. Patrick’s Rugby footbal team won the Brennan Cup when they met the Gisborne Marist Club’s team in the final at the North Island Marist Club’s tournament at Napier on Monday. Play started off with a tedious amount of kicking, which repeatedly failed to find the line. Both sides found it extremely hard to handle a greasy ball with accuracy ; and play settled down to scrambling among the forwards. Gisborne came' dangerously near scoring, but were brought back to a five-yards scrum, and St. Patrick’s cleared. Gisborne came near to scoring again when their forwards swept down the field, profiting by misfielcling among the Palmerston iNorth backs. A misdirected field goal spoilt what appeared to be an excellent opportunity for a try. St. Patrick’s again cleared, rushed the Gisborne backs, and forced them into errors. A smothered clearing kick was gathered by C. Edlin, and lie dropped a splendid field goal. St. Patrick’s 4, , Gisborne 0. The first half, which throughout was mainly in the same strain, ended without further score.
St. Patrick’s opened the second half by compelling two successive forcedowns. From the second drop-out a melee developed, from which St. Patrick’s were awarded a penalty on the twenty-five. Edlin goaled. St. Patrick’s 7, Gisborne 0. Alter the Palmerston North players had spent most of the spell on attack, they were awarded another penalty on the Gisborne twentyfive. This " time Edlin’s kick fell short. Play ended in midfield with St. Patrick's definitely holding the upper hand. Tire final score was: St. Patrick’s 7. Gisborne Marist 0. Mr L. Cleary refereed.
