EASTER TOURNEY.

MANAWATU GOLF CLUB. FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND. With a field of some 90 players, including a good sprinkling of visitors, competing, the Manawatu Golf Club’s Easter tournament opened on the Hokowhitu links to-day. The course was in first-class order, though the greens in some instances were playing a little fast. Weather conditions this morning were perfect. The first qualifying round for the championship was plaved this morning, and the second was in progress this afternoon. Stroke handicaps were held in conjunction, also a teams match this afternoon. On Monday the first rounds of the championship and flight tournaments will be commenced, and bogey handicaps will be played. Finals should be reached on Tuesday afternoon. Under the direction of the secretary (Mr lv. G. Chamberlain), the tournament is well organised. The duties of starter are being carried out by the club’s professional (Mr J. R. Galloway)- . . Scoring this morning was rather indifferent, few players breaking 80, while no really first-class cards were returned. Returning a gross 78 and a net t 4, O. H. Williams, the Manawatu Club captain, went round nicely this morning. He had birdies at the second and sixth, going out in 39 after a seven at the seventh. He came home in two over scratch figures, recording a nice birdie four at the 16th. L. Seifert, junr., similarly did a round of 78. He took 40 going out after a seven at the fifth and came home in 38, winding up with a tin ic at the last. T. Louisson took 79 for his morning round, which was very steady. i\fter going out in 38, K. G. Glendinning required 44 for the homeward journey. Taking 3S out and 40 back, A.‘ E. Ekstedt completed the course in 78.
