GARRISON BAND.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Tho Garrison Band Committee met on "Wednesday, Colonel J. H. Whyte being in the chair. Others present were Messrs J. P. Cowlinhaw, E. J. Oakley, W. H. Brown, H. Haybittle, R. Shackleton, J. Creighton, R. L. C. Aitchison and Lieutenant C. Pike (conductor). An apology for absence was received from Captain G. M. McCaskill. Reporting as manager of the band for the visit to Timaru on tlie occasion of the la.st championship contest, Mr Brown said tho arrangements made for the band had been excellent. He also dealt with several other matters along the lines of iris report already published. On the motion of Mr Oakley, seconded by the chairman, it -was decided to place on record the committee’s appreciation of Mr Brown’s capable discharge of the duties of manager. Speaking as a member of the band, Mr flaybittl-e eulogised MiBrown’s management at the contest. The chairman expressed the committee’s wish that the conductor convey to the members of tho band their congratulations on their performance and conduct at Timaru, the speaker also congiatulating the conductor. The conductor and the members of the band had done all. they could to uphold the reputation of both tho band anti i al-m-erston North, and the committee continued to have ’the greatest taitn in the conductor and the bandsmen, he said. , , • c It was decided, on tlie motion ot Mr Aitchison, seconded by Mr Brown, that it be a recommendation to the annual meeting of the band that the 1936 contest, to be held at New i Ivmouth, should be attended, and that accommodation for the bandsmen should be pencilled in accordingly. Letters of thanks are to be iorwardocl to the Mayor (Mr .A. E. Mansford) and to Mr G. Luoni (president of the Licensed Victuallers Asbociation) for their efforts to ha\ e the 1936 hand contest held at Palmerston North. Letters of thanks are also to be forwarded to Messrs D. Davis and Humphries and Sergeant-Major Holmes, who assisted the band when its members were practising for tho quickstep championship. The meeting decided to forward the name of Lieutenant C. Pike to tlie New Zealand Brass Bands’ Association as a judge for band contests in the Dominion. . An invitation was received tor the conductor and members of the band to attend the annual ball of tlie 7th Battery at AVaipukurau on. March 27, when tlie battery’s camp will be held. Mr A. Rushworth made application for the use of the band hall as a skating rink. On the motion of tlie chairman, seconded by Air Shackleton, it was decided that ATcssrs Oakley ' and Brown should interview Mr Rushworth with power to act. It was reported that the band had accepted an 'engagement by . Messrs Collinson and (Tinningliame, Ltd., to play on four nights, and it was also reported that the band had been engaged by the Afanawatu Racing Club for the autumn meeting.
