FROM STABLE AND COURSE.

(By “Binocular.”J With the Trontham contingent absentees, the track operations at Awa ami yesterday morning wore somewhat uninteresting. Both the course proper—the flags being very wide out—and the plough were in use. A good downpour would bo appreciated by local mentors for the tracks are very hard. Miss Pnngo, who was ridden by the former southern horseman, W. Pascoe, was sent n couple of rounds over the battens, giving a pleasing display on the u'hole, although she got in a bit close to the fence ill the straight both times. The two-year-old Finnesko (Masefield) and Romp Along (Ireland) went out to run six furlongs at three-quarter pace. The former broke away first to run the first furlong in 13 3-ssecs and three in 43secs. The pace was not on and Romp Along was on terms at the finish after taking 1.31 for the full distance. Pungo (B. Brown) and The Drone (Pine) ran six furlongs on the plough, the last five furlongs being left behind in 1.9 3-5. In tho straight W. E. Pine lost an iron and The Drono was eased up. Waitohn (W. Broughton) and a Colossus gelding from Mrs McDonald’s establishment, with 11. Rood in tho saddle, slipped over five furlongs in 1.7 g, tho former finishing tho stronger. A full-sister to Skyridor, who will carry the colours of Mr G. J. James—former owner of the ’chaser and hurdler Aocrvate (now defunct), displayed a lot of speed in defeating Sir Romeo over five furlongs on the course proper. Although small, this marc has been given an insight into the jumping branch and shows distinct promise. Note Issue (Anderson), who is a very free galloper, strode over five furlongs in 1.9. While she apearod to be slowing up at the close, she nevertheless carried on, actually covering the best part of a mile before being pulled up. Full Throttle (W. Broughton) was to have galloped seven furlongs on the course proper, but after striding along very freely in the early portion of his task, he had to be pulled up, his rider having lost an iron two furlongs from homo. It was unusual to witness two such incidents on the one morning. Rerentu was given easy work on tho plough, tho Paper Money gelding appearing to be distinctly sore. The indications are that he will not race till the sting departs from tho tracks. Another local representative who has been finding the hard ground other than to his liking is Beau Gallnnte. Recently, the racecourse staff at Awapuni concreted the front of a number of the stalls at tho training stables with excellent results. Previously it has been the custom to place clay in the stalls, but it requires renewing each year. Apart from enabling tho stalls to be kept cleaner, the concrete prevents horses from stamping holes when fastened in the stalls. TOPICS FROM AFIELD. The Australian jockey Darby Munro, who won tho Melbourne Cup on Peter Pun last November, is spending a holiday in New Zealand, and is at present at Rotorua. The jumper Thespis has returned to Elicrslio after a short respite at Cambridge and is in excellent order to go ahead with his preparation for the autumn meetings. Little Artist, a three-year-old by Little England from Miss Roseland, made a good showing in the Trial Stakes at Te Rapa in which he finished third. He was always prominent and held on well at the finish, heads dividing the placed horses. Little Artist, with more experience, is euro to pay his way. A colt that will attract a lot of attention when he makes his appearance in the Nursery Handicap on the second day at Trenthain is the Iliad—Kiltee! two-year-old Plato, who is owned by Mr T. H. Lowry, and trained by F. Davis at AVoodville. A fine looking eolt, Plato has yet to race, but ho has shown ability to galtop, and a high ojiinion is held of him. His dam, Kilted, is a full-sister to the' A.J.C. Derby winner Kilbov. The Ilawera training tracks nro extremely busy at present, for one of the largest local teams for mnny years will race at the Manawatu meeting (states a Taranaki writer). In an interesting trial Carfex finished two lengths ahead of Golden Hair over six furlongs in 1.20. Carfex was impressive, but Golden Hair disappointed. She will not bo taken to Trcntham. Ingenuity, who is now tho only local horse making tho Trentham trip, decisively heat Arouse over seven furlongs in 1.31 1-5. She galloped pleasingly, for she is usually an indifferent track worker. Chief Marionette had won two races on end prior to being taken north for the Waikato meeting. When paraded for tho Storey Memorial she seemed to go very seratchily when doing her preliminary. When the field settled down she was at tho rear, and there was only one horse behind her when they turned for home. She then put in a great run on the outside and buried everything for pace over the last hundred yards to win comfortably by a length. On Monday, as the result of her victory, she was made a warm favourite for the Vcrcoe Handicap, and she was very sore when paraded, while her rider kept her moving all the time when she was at the nost. She -an quite a good nice, never being further back than fifth throughout, and finished in that position. The ground was very hard on both days, and' this probably accounts for her failure to gain a place ou Monday. She is a bonny mare and on softer tracks during tho winter she is sure to win again.
