Mrs A. Sutherland, of Palmerston North, has been spending a few weeks' at Plinunerton. Mrs C. N. Houghton, of Awaliuri, is at present spending a few days with her parents, Mr and. Mrs W. T. Pratt, “Glengarry,” Apiti. Miss Suzanne Collins, daughter of Mr and Mrs D. Collins, of the AVairarapa, and eldest grand-daughter of Mr and Mrs L. A. Abraham, left for England on the Rangitiki to-day with Mrs W. E. Collins (her grandmother on the father’s side), of Wellington. Miss I. Grant, of Timaru, is the guest of Mrs Hugh Kissling, Manapouri Crescent. Miss M. Stewart, of Havelock North, is the guest of Mrs H. J. King, Elmira Avenue. The many friends of Mrs H. Billens, of Fitzlierbert Avenue, one of the oldest and most esteemed residents of the city, will regret to learn that she recently sustained serious injuries as the result of a fall at her residence. Miss K. Billens, a daughter of Mrs Billens, is a member of the teaching staff of the Terrace End School, and, she was accorded a vote of sympathy' at last evening’s meeting of the committee, who expressed the hope that Mrs Billens would enjoy a complete recovery to health. Miss M. Nathan, of Palmerston North, secured several awards pt the Horowlienua Kennel Club’s ribbon parade at Otaki on Wednesday with her Scotch terrier Strathclyde Midge and a puppy wire-haired fox terrier, Sehvee Peggotty. The puppy took first prize in the section for bitches under six months in the wire-haired fox terriers class. Strathclyde Midge secured the first prize for Scotch terriers under 12 months, colonial breed, and also the first prize in the open section. Strathclyde Midge was also placed third in the champion puppy stakes. There were seven entries and the contest was described as being very keen. ENGAGEMENT. The engagement is announced of Ethel Mae, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs C. H. Thompson, Kopane, Palmerston North, to Alfred William, elder son of Mr and Mrs W. H. Humphrey, “Edale,” Stanway.
BUSINESS GIRLS’ CLUB. ADDRESS AT LUNCHEON. The fortnightly luncheon gathering of the Business Girls’ Club was held yesterday at the tea-rooms of Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame, Ltd. Miss M. Cooksley presided over a good attendance. Apologies for absence were tendered on behalf of Mesdames H. Palmer and Cooksley and .Edwards, Blundell and Mitchell. AUsitors welcomed were Misses D. Mason, H. Tarr, Q. Elley, C. Sandman, Sherlock, Johnston. Pavitt and Stenberg. Sympathy was expressed with Miss Marion Fitch, who was reported to be ill in hospital. Mr G. C. Petersen was the speaker, lus subject being the early Maori history of the Manawatu. He referred to the arrival of the Rangitane tribe, by the canoe Kurahaupo from Hawaiki, and related several legends handed down from the early days, concerning the naming of the rivers and their meaning. Mr Petersen added that it was a matter of absorbing interest to lift the curtain on past events associated with the very la.nd on which Palmerston North now stood, and to visualise the great changes which had since taken place. Mr. Petersen was accorded a vote of thanks with acclamation. r' CROQUET TOURNEY. PLAY IN HEAA r Y RAIN. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 14. In spite of heavy rain the annual Dominion croquet championship tournament was continued to-day. The final of the Z section of the handicap singles was won by Mrs" Burrett, Mrs Sargison being runner-up. The final of the open championship doubles will be played to-morrow between Mesdames Clark and Tingey and Mito Skeet and AVard Petley. 11l the open championship singles, Mrs Baker (Auckland) beat Captain Hartnell, present holder of tlio Dominion title, 26—18 and 26—6. Mrs Thomson, the Auckland champion, was defeated by Mrs Caldow and Mrs E. Bassett in the ladies’ championship S 1 Idlriinal of the level singles for the AVhittaker Cup, between Mrs Morgan (Manawatu) and Mrs J. Clark (Auckland) was commenced today, each player winning a game. The match will be concluded to-morrow.
WORK FOR CHILDREN. MRS L. A. ABRAHAM HONOURED. At the monthly meeting of the All Saints’ Children’s Home Committee, ! held yesterday, at the home, Canon | Woodward read a letter from Mrs L. |A. Abraham tendering her resignation 1 as secretary of the committee. During 'her many years of association with the | home Mrs Abraham had done wonderful work a.nd no one, said Canon WoodI ward, knew the inner workings'of the ! home better than Mrs Abraham, who i had devoted much time aud thought i for the benefit of the work she loved. J However, Mrs Abraham .would still be ’ at hand to give her help and counsel to : those carrying on the work. The committee passed a resolution making Mrs Abraham a life member of the commitMrs W. F. Field has been acting-sec-retary for the committee during the past year and a permanent secretary will be appointed at the annual meeting. ALL SAINTS’ HOME. At a meeting of the committee of All Saints’ Children’s Homo, yesterday, the matron’s report stated that vegetables, etc., were now coming in from the harvest festivals, but there was a shortage of potatoes as it took a large quantity to satisfy the needs of so large a family. WOMEN’S DIVISION. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held at Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s rooms, yesterday afternoon, Mrs Howell presiding. Others present included Mesdames W. G. Shannon, H. Bond, AV. J. Croucher, 11. Green, H. Sinclair, AA : . Doherty, T. - Close, J. Boyce, AV. F. Field (secretary) and Miss M. Grant. An apology for absence was received from Mrs Nicholls. Correspondence included sevarl letters of appreciation for expressions of sympathy received from the branch. I A report of the Dominion executive
meeting, held in Christchurch in December, was to hand, and the president explained the remits and read the Dominion treasurer’s financial report, which disclosed the fact that branches must exert themselves to raise funds to enable the organiastion to carry on with its task of helping country women in such times as at present exist.
The garden party to be held at Marten in Miss Simpson’s beautiful grounds, this month, is to he a monster combined effort on ihe part of all branches in the Wellington Central provincial district to raise money for a central fund which will assist the executive to help smaller branches to defray the cost of their housekeepers’ salaries, etc. The annual meeting will be observed at the next meeting of the branch. Prior to closing the meeting yesterday Mrs Howell informed the committee that she would not be seeking re-elec-tion as president. Mrs Howell has been an active _ member of the committee since the inception of the branch eight years ago, during five of which she has acted as president, and her announcement was received with regret by all present. Miss Grant, on behalf of the committee, voiced their feelings and at a later stage a resolution was passed asking Mrs Howell to reconsider her decision. GIRLS’ MUSIC CLUB. FIRST GATHERING OF SEASON. The Girls’ Music Club entered upon its activities for tho 1935 season last evening, when there was a large and enthusiastic gathering of members and visitors, who were regaled with a most interesting programme. Bowden, Joan Alaunder. Supper was served at the conclusion of the programme, the tables presenting a pleasing appearance, being decorated with vase's and bowls of asters, dahlias and hydrangeas.
