ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH.
MEN’S CLUB MEETING. The opening meeting for the season of the All Saints’ Men’s Club was held on Wednesday and attracted a large gathering of members. The president, Canon G. Y. Woodward, was in the chair. The main feature of the gathering was a splendid address delivered by Air E. S. Horn, a former Palmerston North resident, and now connected with the Ethiopian Alission. who is home on furlough. Air Hern dealt interestingly with the missionary, military and commercial life of Abyssinia, 'lho work of tho mission had shown good progress during the last seven years and had found a friend in King Haiho Lelamsie, who had provided a site for a hospital. Abyssinia was moving slowly towards more up-to-date methods among the people, said the speaker. The King was very progressive and had imported several aeroplanes, but the army was badly equipped for modern warfare and would not stand a real chance against an enemy like Italy should the latter decide to attack. . The feudal system of ancient England was still in vogue in Abyssinia, continued the speaker. lot of the poorer people was hard. IJiere was no national debt in the country, that making it unique among the nations ni’ Uie world, but its assets were very small. At the conclusion of the address a vote of thanks to the speaker was carried, after which tlio subject was open for discussion, members fully availing themselves of the opportunity offered. The evening concluded with informal card games and supper. A’isitors welcomed were Messrs R. Beatson and J. E. Larsen. A vote of sympathy was accorded to Air H. Exton ill the loss of his mother, the members standing in silence. The next meeting will bo devoted to competitive speeches.
