RANGIOTU
(From Our Own Correspondent.) RANGIOTU, March 14. The February meeting of the Women’s Institute, postponed till March, was held on Wednesday, when there was an excellent attendance of members and several visitors. Mrs E. Beard presided. Two new members, Mrs Kelly (Bainesse) and Miss E. Lover, were enrolled. A vote of sympathy with Mrs Will, group convener, _in her recent bereavement was expressed. Following the disposal of the routine business, the president gave a detailed report of the group committee meeting recently held at Halcombe. At the conclusion of her report Mrs Beard stated that, the next group meeting would be held at Rangiotu in August. It was resolved that the next annual meeting bo held on March 27. Matters in connection with the institute’s birthday, in April, were discussed when several important details were finalised. A pleasant interlude in the proceedings was the presentation of a crystal rose bowd to Mrs Stanbru, who was married recently, also to Mrs Chrystal, Mrs Tennant accepting the gift in the absence of her daughter, who has left the district. Mr J. H. Stevens, of Palmerston North, gave an interesting lecture on native trees and Maori folk-lore. The upper standards of the local school were present bv invitation. John Jenkins, a senior prefect of the school, thanked Mr Stevens for his address and the ladies of the institute for t'nc afternoon tea. On tlie motion of the president, the lecturer was accorded a vote of thanks. Mr fetevens has consented to return at a future date To continue his series of lectures. The points prize competition was for the prettiest coat hanger. There was a fair number of entries and the result was as follows: Miss G. Hughes 1, Mrs M. G'ooksley 2. In a competition for the best arranged mantel vase, Mrs Beard was awarded first prize. The hostesses were Mesdames Ryan and Buchanan and Misses Liza Simmons and Rona' Russell. At the next meeting of the institute the competitions will be for best home-made Madeira cake, and hand posy, and the demonstration will be on rug making. . At a well-attended meeting of the lenms Club, held recently and presided over by Mr J. Shaw, gratification was expressed bv members at the success of the _ recent gala celebrations, which resulted in the sum of £ls 5s 6d being credited to the general funds of the club. Hie chahmnn pointed out that the club’s two courts required urgent attention in the matter of tar-sealing, and no doubt the recent success attained would adcl as a stimulus to further efforts from its members. The work in view would be fairly ccstly, but he was confident that with their loyal and continued support they would in time attain thenobject. The meeting decided to hold a bail to augment the club’s funds for the tar-sealing and improvement of the courts. Mrs I). Kelly (Moore’s Road), who was recently admitted to hospital and underwent an operation, is making satisfactory progress. Mr and Mrs Hedley Wilton are visiting Tauniarunui. Mrs Whitworth and Miss Nugent, of Hastings, are visiting Mrs jd. Toogood (Pyke’s Road).
