THE WEATHER

FAIR TO CLOUDY. Per Press Association. AYELLINGTON, March 14. Pressure is still high to the east of New Zealand and rather low to tlie north and west. Forecast; Light to fresh east to south-east winds. Weather: Mainly fair to cloudv, but some isolated showers on the coast. Seas, smooth to moderate. RAIN IN AVAIKATO. AVELCOMED BY FARMERS. PEAT FIRES SUPPRESSED. HAMILTON, March 12. Farmers in the AVaikato welcomed a steady rain to-day as a valuable incentive to autumn growth. After the long drought pastures were revived by the last rain to a surprising degree. There is no doubt about autumn feed. The rain has suppressed the peat fires, which had broken out in portions of tho swamp areas, and had seen still smouidering since the end of January. STEADY RAIN. PUKEKOHE. March 12. Light but steady rain has been falling for the past 24 hours, and it has been welcomed by farmers. The last heavy rain set the crops going, and now they will be further refreshed. The potato crops have been coming on .well during the past few weeks, but there is still the doubt whether they will reach maturity before frosts set in. NEEDED AT KAAVHIA. OF BENEFIT TO PASTURES:; KAAVHIA, March 12. Steady rain throughout the night will greatly benefit pastures in the Kawhia district. Recent rain had not been sufficient, and more was badly needed. MANAAVATU RIVER GAUGE. Noon.—lft.
