Mr Iv. J. Caverhill, District Public Trustee at Mnsterton, has been appointed Deputy-Superintendent of the State Advances Department. Tlie Piitne Minister (Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) celebrated His 60th birthday on Tuesday, having been born at Lyttelton on March 12, 1869. Messrs W. G. Shannon of Rangitikei Line, and A. Mitchell, of Longburn, left for the south yesterday afternoon to attend a sale of thoroughbred stock at Tim aru. Dr D. H. Bett and Mrs Bett left Palmerston North last evening for Auckland on their way to England. They were accompanied by their son David, who is to further liis education at Sherborne School. Dr Callan, of England, director of the technical research department for Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., and Mr J. Wilson, research director for the firm in Australia and New Zealand, were visitors to Palmerston North yesterday. Tlie death, of Mr Edward Fawns Dutliie is reported in a Dunedin Press Association message. He was a native of Dunedin, being born on November 23, 1860. He joined the firm ot Janies Duthie and Co., who carried on tho business of general carriers and contractors, in 1887, and remained with it until its amalagamation with the New Zealand Express Co., Ltd. Mr Duthie became manager ot tho Dunedin branch of the company and one of its directors. He retiled from the former position at tlie end of 1914 but retained bis seat on the board of directors, and for the past four years was chairman. For close on 40 years lie was closely connected with tlie Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society, and was appointed secretary in 1893, resigning in 1901; lie was president in 1907 and in 1908. He again accepted the secretaryship in 1921, holding office until, through iliheaitli, lie retired from active work a few years ago. The death occurred yesterday morning of Rev. W. Bramwell Scott, minister of Trinity Methodist Church, Wellington South. He attended the. Methodist Conference in Dunedin a few days ago and on Jus return to Wellington'was seized by an attack of appendicitis, which swiftly developed into peritonitis. lie was operated upon oil Sunday night, when it was seen that liis case was hopeless. Mr Scott was 61 years ot ago. Early in the present century lie became attached to the home missionary branch of the Methodist Church of New Zealand. It is not usual to transfer such men to the ministry unless they are single and go through the usual preparatory training at college, but sucli was Mr Scott’s zeal and earnestness that iti his case these conditions were waived. He was minister at Waimate and then Ivaiapoi, after which lie represented the Methodist Church as a chaplain with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, in. which he served with distinction. He was appointed to the charge of Trinity Methodist Church some three years ago. He was known far and wide as a forcible speaker “over the air.”
