RESEARCH COUNCIL.

PROFESSOR RIDDET APPOINTED. RETIREMENT OF CHAIRMAN. AVELLINGTON, March 12. Changes in the personnel of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research are announced. Mr George Shirtcliffe, who has been chairman of the council since, its igcgption, has tendered liis resignation its a member, and the Government has appointed Professor W. Riddet, of Massey Agricultural College, as his successor on the council.

Dr. H. G. Denham, of Christchurch, has been appointed to succeed Mr Shirtcliffe as chairman.

Professor Riddet is Logan Campbell Professor of Agriculture and Director of the Dairy Research Institute at Palmerston North. He was born at Dairy, Ayrshire, where he received his primary school education. Subsequently lie attended the Irvine Royal Academy, the AVest of Scotland Agricultural College and Glasgow University. He was on active service in the Great AVar for four years in the R.A.AT.C., and the 4th Battalion R.S.F. In 1921 he joined the staff of the West of Scotland Agricultural College, first as a county instructor in agriculture and dairying, and later as research assistant "and lecturer. He was appointed Professor of Agriculture at Auckland University Col’ege in 1925,' but when Massey Agricultural College was established two yea-s later lie camp, to Palmerston North in a similar’ capacity. He is well known os director of the Dairy Research Institute. He w r as appointed last year as one of the members of the secretariat of the Royal Commission investigating the dairy industry. Dr. Denham is Professor of Chemistry at Canterbury College. He was born in Christchurch in 1880. and was educated at the Christchurch Bovs’ High School and at Canterbury College, taking bis M.A. and M.Sc. degrees. He took bis D.Sc. degree at Liverpool and Ph.D. at Heidelberg, and was an Exhibition Research scholar from 1906 to 1909. Dr. Denham was lecturer in chemistry and assistant professor at the University of Queensland from 1912 to 1921, and Professor of inorganic chemistry at the University of Capetown in 1921-22, and has held his present nositmn at Canterbury College since 1923. He was appointed to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research in 1926.
