HAWKE CUP

TEAM TO OPPOSE SOUTHLAND. The final Hawke Cup challenge lor the season will be entered upon at the Sportsground next Saturday and, if necessary, will be continued on the following Monday and Tuesday. Mr A. M. Ongley, sole selector for Manawatu, has announced that the following players will do duty against Southland who were, incidentally, the first holders of the Hawke Cup : W. E. Norris, capt. (Palmerston), A. Cutler-(United) N. Galliclian (Old Boys), It. J. Hatcii (Palmerston), J. Murchison (Y.M.C.A.), K. Olliver (City Council), C. McVicar (City Council), M. A. Ongley (Palmerston), L. Monteith (United), G. Berquist (Palmerston), K. Hatch (Y.M.C.A.). Twelfth man, G. Ilobertson (Palmerston) . The eleven in which the selector is pinning his faith differs very little to that which opposed Marlborough, the only alteration being that K. Olliver, who had taken the field against Taranaki and Poverty Bay, but who was not available in the succeeding matches, again goes into the side and Pollitt. the young High School' batsman, retires. C. McVicar, who did so well against Marlborough at his first appearance in the cup series, retains his place, and G. Robertson, who had played against Taranaki, Poverty Bay and Hawke’s Bay, but who was not available when the team to oppose Marlborough was selected, has failed to regain his place. Mr Ongley has deliberately refrained from including himself, although his club averages this season are little short of phenomenal, while he was fourth top scorer against Hawke’s Bay at his one appearance in Hawke Cup cricket this season.

It is interesting, to note that of the 12 players called on by the selector 10 of them are products of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, the sole exceptions being J. Murchison and L. Monteith, who are products of Christchurch and Auckland schools respectively. Every member is sufficiently youg to merit the team being termed a combination of colts.—" Slip.”
