AUSTRALIAN CUP.
SYLVANDALE SUCCESSFUL. VOITRE WINS ON COUNT ITO. MELBOURNE, March 10. Tho weather was warm and there was a large attendance for the third day of tlie Victoria Racing Club’s meeting at Flemington. , Menolik appreciated tho longer journey and improved on his Pines Hurdle form, to win the Autumn Hurdle Race. He is raced by Phar Lap’s owner and is trained by H. Telford. Bayntun was very distressed after the race, and his connections held a suspicion that the gelding had been doped. Swabs wore taken and an inquiry was held later in tho afternoon.
Despite tho fact that she steered on errotin course over the final stages, Bimilla outclassed her rivals in tire Ascot Vale Stakos and directed attention to the unfortunate oversight in not nominating her sire Excitement for the Sires’ Preduce Stakes, thus making the filly ' ineligible for that event. She will probably prove the outstanding juvenile of tho season. K. Yoitre’s vigorous horsemanship was the chief factor in Count Ito’s victory in the CYM. Lloyd Stakes; Voitro was loudly cheered. Count Ito has now hud four wins in succession. Yesterday’s was the last race run under the ownership of Mr P. B. Quinlan. Sylvandalo was always well placed and had no trouble, withstanding La Trobe s challenge, in winning the Australian Cup. Flail finished well and boat Topical for third place. King March was a possibility at the entrance to the straight, but tired. God Trail was never dangerous. The timo was only half a second outside Nadoon’s Flemington rocord. Sylvandale is owned by “Miss Lorna Doolie,’ and she is the first lady owner of a winner of the race.
Lascala displayed improved stamina m the Bourke Handicap. His sire is Manfred and his dam Frances Trcssady, who both won the Victoria Derby. The sectional times in tho Australia Cup wore : First six furlongs, 1.21; next four, 49,,; the subsequently four, 51; the last four, 48$; and the last six, 1.135. Whittington, trained by the former New Zealander, George Price, had a comfortable win in the Farewell' Handicap. He lias had two wins, two seconds, and a third in five starts at the Caulfield and Flemington autumn meetings. Results :
