A LAWN TENNIS
MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of the management committee of the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association was held last evening, Mr J. T. McDonald presiding. Also present were Messrs J. Christie, C. C. Yates, D. I. Robertson, L. D. Lovelock, and J. White (secretary). The secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Association wrote in connection with Manawatn’s challenge for the Christie Cup, stating that March 16 would he accepted as the date of the match. The courts at the present time were hardly playable.—lt. was decided that the match be played on the date named. The Wanganui Association wrote suggesting March 23 as the date of their visit.—ln the event of the Manawatu Association winning the Christie Cup from Hawke’s Bay it was suggested that the fixture he treated as a Christie Cup one.—The suggestion was accepted, the Palmerston North Club to be approached for the use of its courts for the match. Mr McDonald questioned if the rules would permit of the match being for the Christie Cup, these declaring that "a period of three weeks must elapse before a challenge may be made for the cup after it had been won. It was decided to advise the Wanganui Association of the position and express regret- that a challenge for the cup (if won) could not he entertained. The Bulls Club applied for permission to play the Colyton Club on March 9 at Bulls. —Granted. The Wairarapa Association forwarded an invitation to send a team of six men and six ladies to Carterton on March 9 for the annual match. It was suggested that the players arrive not later than 10.30 a.m. The committee decided to accept the invitation for the match. Mr R. Hardie Boys furnished a report of the quarterly meeting of the N.Z. Lawn Tennis Association, which it was decided to acknowledge with appreciation. Mr H. N. Watson, the president of the association, wrote expressing the opinion that the conducting of a championship ladder was a mistaken policy, pointing out what ho considered to he fallacies in the system. The main difficulty was to be found in the widely spread nature of the association’s territory, it being extremely unlikely that contestants would travel long distances to play ladder matches. If a ladder was conducted only for the Palmerston North and Longburn clubs some of the difficulties might he overcome'. Tlie chairman remarked that, although the competition had been in force for only a fortnight, there were already nine challenges, including one by tiie Feilding Club. Mr Lovelock said he would be pleased to see the system continued; it had met with the approval of the Paliiatua Club. It was decided to thank Mr Watson for his communication and to advise him that the committee recognised the difficulty of the perfect working of the scheme and intended, if necessary, to revise the rules at the end of the season. With the object of compiling records of association matches, it was decided to ask Mr Watson if he would furnish the details of the teams in matches which' have been already decided.
