DAIRY PRODUCE.

LONDON MARKET REPORT. Joseph'Nathan and Co., Ltd., have received from London the following cabled advice, dated March 4, 1935: —New Zealand butter, 78s per cwt.; New Zonland cheese, white 45s 6d, coloured 465; both markets very quiet. Commenting on the improved position of the London butter market in January in regard to prices and stocks, compared with that of a year ago, Dalgety and Ooy.’s London agents, writing on January 17, said: —These fac f s discount the idea that the prohibition by New Zealand of “spot,” c.i.f., and f.o.b. buying, especially “spot” buying, cn their own account, on the part of importers would have a disastrous effect. Under the new conditions set up by the agreement between the New Zealand Dairy Board and the importers, whatever improvements take place in price will accrue to the factories, and Australian consignments will also share in the benefit. AUSTRALIAN LAMB PRICES. DANGER OF CONTROL. Australian interests in London are perturbed at recent developments in the lamb trade, contending that there is now such a large percentage of the Australian trade controlled by the same firms which monopolise the industry in South America, that there is a danger of Commonwealth producers eventually being sacrificed to them, with tho prospect of a gradual reduction in. the present relatively high prices paid to growers. Australian lamb recently touched 7d a lb in the Smithfiold market, but this was promptly brought down by tho release of large quantities of South American lamb controlled by the same firms, who possess tho power to manipulate the market according to their own requirements. An Australian authority points out that producers in the Commonwealth may become tied to a monopoly similar to that in South America if an- effort is not made to secure a measure of independence in marketing.
