TAIKOREA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) TAIKOREA, March 4. The rain which was experienced recently did a groat deal of goed and in the week which has elapsed since then the growth of grass has been wonderful. Nearly four inches of rain foil in three days and it was only just in time to promote growth for autumn and winter food and . to replenish sadly diminished water supplied. On Saturday the Rangiotu A tennis team visited Taikorea to p'nv a return match —Taikorea played at Rangiotu in Do ember last—arid enjoyed ideal weather. Three courts were used and tho games were got through —in good time. Rangiotu were the victors by 2 sots. Afternoon tea was served in the Taikorea Hall at tho conclusion of play and was very welcome. Mr Shaw voiced thanks on behalf of the Rangiotu players, Mr A. Burmeister replying for Taikorea. Detailed scores aro as follow, the local players being mentioned first: —Men’s singles: J. C. Ward boat E. Donaldson, 6 —3; C. Hehir lost to W. Hunia, 5 —6; It. Algar lost to D. Donaldson, 4—6; Burmcistcr lost to Chapman, 5 —6; Hobbs beat Shaw. 6—2; Hill beat Mora, 6 —5. Ladies’ singles: Miss Hill beat Mrs Chapmnn, 6 —4; Mrs Burmeister lost to Miss N. Bond, 2 —6; Mrs Prior beat Miss Shaw, 6—4; Miss Smith lost to Miss Quarrie, 2—6; Miss Cornwall heat Mies Tarnati, 6—2; Mrs Castle lost to Mrs Mora, 5 6. Men’s doubles: Ward and Hehir lost to E. Miss Shaw and Miss Quarrie, 6 5; Mrs Cornwall and Mrs Castle beat Miss Tarnati and Mrs Mora, 6 —2. Mixed doubles: Ward and Miss Hill lost to E. Donaldson and Mrs Chapman, 5—6; C. Hehir and Mrs Burmeister lest to Hunia and Miss Bond, 3—5; Algar and Mrs Prior lost to D. Donaldson and Miss Shaw, 2—6; Burmeister and Miss Smith lost to Chapman and Miss Quarrie, 5—6; Hobbs and Miss Cornwall beat Shaw and Miss Tarnati, 6—2; Hill and Mrs Castle beat Mora and Mrs Mora, 6—4. Rangiotu, 13 sots, 112 games; Taikorea, .11 sets, 114 games. At the week-end a friendly cricket match was played between Taikorea and Buffalo Lodge cricket teams. Taikorea won by 45 runs. On Friday afternoon tho Kairanga School tennis team visited Taikorea for a match, the visitors winning bj 12 sets to 4. Afternoon tea was sorved by tho Taikorea girls. Mr Merrington, inspector for the Wanganui Education Board, visited the school on Wednesday last. The friends of Mr F. Carroll will regret to learn that he is at present ill. Colds and summer sickness have both been experienced in tho district of late. I Mrs Smith and her daughter returned 1 on Saturday from a holiday spent in Christchurch.
