FRENCHMEN AT AUCKLAND. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 4. A distinguished opening of.their New Zealand tour was made by the swimming champions, Jean Taris and Emile Poussard, of France, at a carnival in the tepid baths. As holder of the European titles for several years and of the world’s records for distances ranging from 300 metres to 1000 metres. Taris was a formidable opponent for Auckland’s champions, who, although outstanding in their own class, were made to appear like novices in scratch races over 220yds and 440yds. .laris won the former by 18 yards Irom E, B. Franklnim, his time (2.16 3-5) breaking the New Zealand record ot N. Crump, who ivas third, by 5 2-ssec. and tlio Australian record by 1 2-ssec, This is held by the Japanese, Katsuo Takaishi, but the fastest time registered by an Australian is 2.20 3-5, the performer being G. Voekler, of Melbourne. In the quarter-mile Taris headed Ins opponents, IV. Johnson and R. Thomas, soon after the start and touched the finishing rope a winner by 42 yards from Johnson, who gained second place from Thomas on a touch. The Frenchman’s time was 4.59 2-5, which is Msec faster than G. Bridson’s Dominion record.

While Poussard dived, the spectators were spellbound. Miss Mona Ley'don, the New Zealand 220yds. and 440yds. women champion swimmer, left by the Wanganella to compete at the New South Wales championships.
