APITI.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) APITI, March 4. Tho ball was taxed to its utmost capacity last weok when a concert and dance was held to celebrate the opening of the stage. The chairman of the Domain Board called on Mr Cummerfield, a member of the original board, to cut the ribbon and officially open the stago. Before doing so, Mr Cummerfield gave some reminiscences of early Apiti, when the first concert was held under the verandah of Mr F. Guy’s store. Mr Cummerfield also referred to tho performers of other years, especially mentioning Miss Rosina Buckman, who once delighted Apiti audiences with her singing. Mr Cummerfield then’ cut the ribbon and declared the stage open. _A well-bal-anced programme followed, being opened with instrumental items by the Reid Brothers, of Palmerston North; songs by Mrs P. Warnock, Messrs Donaldson and Woods (Foilding), J. Hansen (Kimbolton), Jensen (Bunnythorpe), W. G. Morris and C. Watkins; humorous items by Messrs Lewis and Hansen. Mr J. Selwyn, of Palmerston North, was an entertaining lender of community singing and was ably assisted -by Mr Renwick at tho piano. An unusual item, “Thought Reading” by “Flotsam and Jetsam,” proved a clever exhibition. Four Table Flat girls, Misses Evelyn and Rae Jensen, rhyllis and Doreen Waterson. staged a bright little dialogue tided “Topsy.” A one-act comedy, “They're Nono of Them Perfect,” was presented by tho Women’s Institute players. The characters were well portrayed by Mesdames W. Duncan, J. F. Jensen, G. Gubbins, C. Stanley, F. Munro, and K. Waterson. Accompaniments were played by Mr 3 Hanson and Mrs W. Duncan. Before supper was served Mr McKay expressed thanks to the performers and all who had helped to make tho evening a success. After supper the floor was cleared for dancing, which continued until tho early hours. Mr J. McKay was the M.C. and Mrs T. Fowoll, Miss Signal, and Mr J. Hansen supplied the music. A large stack of hay, the crop from 16 acres on Mr Arthur Prince’s farm, was burned last Wednesday. As the 6tack was for winter feed tho loss will moan more than tho cash value of the hay to the owner.
Miss McKay is an Apiti visitor to Fellding where she is staying with her grandparents. Mr and Mrs H. Osborne.
