WIN FOR COUNTRY

CRICKET AT WELLINGTON. MANAWATU PLAYERS’ BIG HELP. WELLINGTON, March 5. The Country, cricket representativesachieved a convincing victory by three w.ickets over the Town in the annual match which was concluded at the Basin Reserve. Wellington, yesterday afternoon. A. Cutler (Manawatu) ended the match in spectacular fashion by lifting J. R. Lamason into the stand enclosure for six. Country’s victory was enthusiastically received by the crowd.

Continuing its second innings yesterday morning, Town was all out for 206 shortly before lunch. J. Ell (Wellington) 66 not out on Saturday, took his total to 84. N. Gallichan (Manawatu) bowled well and finished up with four wickets for 14 runs.

Country required 158 runs in its second innings to win the match. The opening men did not last long, but another profitable third-wicket partnership between H. E. Reaney and M. A. J. O’Brien, both of Hawko’s Bay, saw the side well on the way. Town put up a good fight in the closing stages, but was unequal to the task of dismissing the country men within the runs .required. Cutler, not out 49, was the side's highest scorer, and although he had more than one “life,” it was a valuable innings for his team. D. A. R. Moloney (Wellington), C. Parsloe (Kilbirnie) and E. D. Blundell (Wellington) shared the Town bowling honours. When Ell, 66 not out, and Rainbird, 13 not out, resumed batting yesterday morning, runs came steadily. Hatch and Christensen opened the bowling, but when Gallichan was brought on there was a change, and lie dismissed both Ell .and Rainbird. Gallichan was right on form, and none of the remaining Town batsmen could make u stand against him. With the first ball of his sixth over the dismissal of the Town team had been completed. Ell’s score included ten fours and Rainbird’s five.

Parsloe dismissed the two opening Country batsmen for nine before lunch, and at the adjournment Reaney and O’Brien were together with 21 on the board.

Resuming after lunch, Reaney, 12 not out, and O’Brien, 3 not out, quickly settled down and runs began' to come steadily, Parsloe and Blundell being the bowlers. Tricklebanlc took over from Parsloe when the latter had sent down three overs after lunch. Reaney then being 18 and O’Brien 17. By sending Blundell for a stinging drive to the long-ou fence O’Brien took his score to 25 and Country’s total into the. fifties. Reaney lifted Triclclebank high to leg for a single to roach 20. With the total at 56 Moloney took over from Tricklebank, and O’Brien reached 30 with a single. He lifted Blundell into the stand enclosure for 6 next over, but the following ball was caught in the slips by McLean. 66 —3 —37. O’Brien had given a polished display, his score including two 4’s and a 6.

Gallichan joined Reaney and opened with a single, but lost his partner, caught behind by TindilJ off Blundell. 71—4r--25. Reaney hit two 4’s. A MANAWATU PARTNERSHIP - With six wickets in hand Country needed 87 to win when Cutler joined Gallichan. Blundell was bowling well and sent, down four successive maiden overs. The batting became very slow, Gallichan and Cutler taking no risks and scoring, when they did. in singles. After having been nearly run out, Gallichan drove Blundell’s next ball to the rails for 4 to enter double figures. The batsmen then opened out more, picking holes in the field with neatly placed shots

Moloney came on in place of Blundell, and Gallichan showed Ids appreciation of the change by lifting his first ball over the long on boundary for 6 to ma.ke his own score 20 and the total 104. Cutler reached 20 with an off drive for 3 off Blundell. Gallichan opened his shoulders in the same over and was caught on the long-on boundary fence by Wilson. 112—5—20. Gallichan had hit a 4 and a 6. Joined by Lambert, Cutler lia<l a "life” when he was dropped in the slips off Tricklebank. Lambert failed to open his account, being caught behind by Tindill off Moloney. 116 —6—o. With four wickets in hand Country required 41 to win. Hatch joined Cutler, and the scoring began again, mostly in singles. Just before the tea adjournment Parsloe at mid-on accepted a hard catch from Hatch off Moloney. 130 —7 —7. Harding joined Cutler, who was 31. The Town fielding was keen and runs were hard to get. At the tea adjournment- at 3.45 Country’s score was 136 for seven wickets (Cutler not out 34, Harding not out 2). Country required 22 runs to win.

Blundell took up the attack after tea, sending down a maiden to Harding. A single came off Lamason’s opening over. Cutler reached 40 with a single off Blundell. Harding square cut Tricklebank just clear of Ell’s hands to the fence, leaving Country seven runs to get to win. He then pulled one to the other fence. , Cutler made the spectacular winning hit, lifting Lamason into the stand enclosure for 6, and the game ended at 4.25, victory going to Country by three wickets.
