WELFARE OF YOUTH.

PRINCE IN THE FOREFRONT.

JUBILEE TRUST FUND

LONDON, March 2. Such a large gathering, including religious leaders, responded to the Prince of Wales’s invitation to discuss his proposal for a national thankoffering to mark the King’s Jubilee that it filled two great rooms of St. James’s Palace.

The Prince, standing in the doorway, and addressing both rooms simultaneously, revealed a plan to form King George's Jubilee Trust to assist the local extension of existing voluntary youth movements. He emphasised millions of British subjects wished to express to the King their deep thankfulness for his reign. While the people -were celebrating the Jubilee with a diversity of local activities and ceremonies, they also felt that the year Should not be allowed to pass without a permanent thank-offering, in which to pour out their gratitude and loyal affection.

“I can think of no call making so universal an appeal as the call of our youth,” said the Prince. “I have ascertained that nothing would give Their Majesties greater pleasure than a thank-offering devoted to the younger generation. I, in common with you, am concerned with boys and girls after leaving school, until 18, when they enter an unfamiliar world at a most critical moment in their physical, moral, and mental development, needing discipline, friends, and opportunity which we can give. Over half a million boys of the age of. 14 to 18 are drifting to manhood lacking guidance and opening for natural higli spirits and ambitions. There is no sadder sight in the world than aimless, dispirited youth; nothing . more heartening than boys and girls in organisations ensuring amusement and the physical, mental, and spiritual fitness for mutual service that makes a people great. This the trust could assist to develop. “It is proposed later to form a committee to assist in framing proposals for submission to the King. Meanwhile you need not await finance, but recruit helpers for the undertaking. The Lord Mayor (Sir Stephen Killick) voiced the meeting’s acceptance of the proposals. . , Tho newspapers emphasise that/ the Prince of Wales has given an inspiring lead. The Times, in a leader, says: “It is the English way to see the occasion not as one for the exaltation of the State or the glorification of authority but for ensuring the developing and well-being of youth. The proposal, if thoroughly supported, will provide a living memorial to the Jubilee in the citizenship of 10, 20 and 30 years ahead.” . ~ Tho Dailv Telegraph says that the Prince of \Vales stressed that he is calling no new organisation into being. He asks for a large national fund from which generous help can be given to organisations already promoting the welfare of youth.
