PERSONAL.

Rev. R. Simpson, minister of Emmanuel Congregational Church, accompanied by Mrs Simpson, left to-day for Christchurch to attend the annual Congregational Assembly.

Rev. H. L. Richards, minister of the Cuba Street Methodist Church, has returned to Palmerston North from Dunedin, where he attended the annual conference of the Methodist Church of New Zealand. The death has occurred of Rev. Father Daniel McLaughlin, M.A., parish priest at Stratford. He was ordained in 1916 and appointed assistant in the parish of Pa.ten. From 191 S to 1921 he was administrator in a Hawke’s Bay parish, and was then appointed professor of dogmatic theology at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel. He was there for five years, and on his retirement from the college was parishpriest at Mart on for two years. He was transferred to Stratford in 1929. At the annual conference of the Methodist Church of New Zealand mention was made of the fact that Mr C. Reed Laws, a son of Dr C. H. Laws, editor of the Methodist Times, had been awarded the degree of doctor of science of the University of New Zealand, the highest honour that could be conferred upon a student of science by the university. A motion was passed congratulating Dr Laws on his son’s brilliant achievement, made the more notable by the fact that he had obtained the degree while working as a school teacher.
