WOMEN’S WORLD

Mrs Paul Fogarty, of Palmerston North, is visiting her mother, Mrs A. Goodson, Wellington. Mr and Mrs J. A. Wemyss, of Palmerston North, have returned from a visit to Wellington. Mrs W. Donald, Wellington, who has been the guest of Mr and Mrs F. A. Litchfield, of Palmerston North, has returned home.

Misses E. Lunn, F. Walker, L. Annesley and B. Anderson left by the Limited express last night for Auckland to take up new positions in that city Mrs J. Walker, of Monrad Street, her friends will be pleased to learn, is making favourable progress after haying undergone an operation in a private hospital. Mrs J. M. Bevan and her daughter, Mrs W. Gleeson, are visitors to Te Aroha, and are guests at Hazelwood. They will be returning home in a few days. Mr and Mrs D. W. Low and Misses D. a.nd E. Low, have left Palmerston North on a holiday visit by car to the Bay of Islands. Miss M. Qulrke, who has held the position of . additional assistant at the Hokowhitu School, left at the weekend for Moawhango, near Taihape, where she commenced duty todav in a similar capacity. In the Duchess of Kent’s trousseau were some attractive jackets.that have set quite a new vogue in sports fashions (says Home Chat). They are made from warm and gay Scotch tartans, double-breasted affairs fastening with metal buttons, and each completed.- 1 with an amusing little forage cap of the same material. They look very effective with a plain tweed skirt and a woolly shirt-blouse. The Duchess has lots of uses for her jackets. She will wear them when skating, a favourite pastime at which she excels, and also on the golf links. Believing that, a wife should share her husband’s interests, the Duchess took up golf soon after her engagement was announced, so that she could play, with the Duke, who is a great enthusiast.

FABEWELL EVENING. The home of Mr and Mrs J. Worsfokl was the scene of a valedictory evening on Saturday for Misses E. Lunn, L. Aimeslcy, B. Anderson, and F. Walker, when numerous friends of these young ladies, who aro leaving Palmerston North to take up new positions in Auckland, met to entertain them. Various members of the party expressed regret at the departure of their friends, wishing them God-speed and happiness in their new surroundings. The company was regaled with a line performance of tap and eccentric dancing by Miss Billy -Hewitt, vocal solos by Miss F. Walker and violin solos by Miss L. Annesley, Miss E. Lunn being the accompanist. Singing and dancing were indulged in until a late hour and the party broke up after an expression of appreciation to the host and hostess for a most enjoyable evening. Prior to their leaving Pori, Paliiatua, for the Kairanga district, Mr and Mrs C. E. Bc-e were met by the residents at the home of Mr and (Mrs F. Waring. After supper, Mr A. Turner expressed the regret all felt at losing Mr and Mrs Bee and. wished them happiness and prosperity in their new home. He asked Mrs Bee to accept a brass log box and Mr Bee a tobacco jar. Mr Bee is now engaged in farming at Kairanga. CROQUET. The Southern Hawke’s Bay croquet tournament, held at I) an no v i rke. was continued on Saturday. In the third round of the handicap doubles Miss Tennant (Palmerston North) and Mrs Donald suffered defeat at the hands of Mrs Sharplev and Miss Eva Card, the score being 26—18. Miss Tennant beat Mrs McAnna.lly, 26—22 in the handicap singles. Playing in the championship singles, first life, Mrs Hides (Feilding) was beaten by Mrs Hogan (Wellington) 26—19, and Mrs Hicks was also beaten in the A grade ladies singles by Mrs Glass (Dannevirke), the score being 26- —21.

SECONDARY SCHOOLS.

GIRLS’ TEAMS MEET

With nine sets to three and 79 games to 48, the Wanganui Girls’ College tennis team defeated the Palmeiston North Girls’ High School team m a match played on both asphalt and grass courts at this centre on Saturday. The visitors, with Miss A. C. Tizard (principal (if the Wanganui Girls College!, and Miss J. Patterson (games mistress) in charge, were welcomed by Mrs M. Rhodes (principal of the Girls High School). Detailed results of the matches are as follow. the Wanganui girls being mentioned first in each instance: — Singles.—L. Metekingi beat N. Oakley, 7—l, L. Marshall lost to P. Lewer, 2—7; B. Anderson beat M. Ailcman, 7—l- M. Broadfoot beat E. Berry, 7—4; R. Peru" beat C. Klee, 7—l; M. Hine, beat B. Russell, 1- —3; J. Burnett beat L. Penketh, 7—5; E. Carrel lost to A. Luke, 3—7. Doubles.—L. Metekingi and B. Anderson beat N. Oakley and P. Lewer, 9—6; M. Broadfoot and L. Marshall beat M. Aikman and E. Berry, 9—3; R. Perry and M. Hine beat C. Klee and B. Russell. 9—l; E. Carrel and J. Burnett lost to I. Penketh and A. Luke, 6—9.

Subsequently the visitors were entertained at afternoon tea in the school corridor, where the tables had been prettily arranged with sunflowers. Miss J. McLeod and girls of the school were in charge. The captain of _ the Wanganui team, Miss L. Metekingi, returned thanks for the games and for the hospitality extended, and 'called for cheers. Miss N. Oakley, captain of the Palmerston North team, expressed pleasure in being able to meet Wanganui in play and in entertaining them. She thanked them for the good games and complimented Wanganui on their play. Miss Oakley also called for cheers for the visitors.
