HAWKE CUP CRICKET

GAME OF UNCERTAINTY. MANAWATU’S NARROW LEAD. In a game wherein the howlers on both sides dominated matters, the position at stumps in the Hawke Cup cricket match between Marlborough (challengers) and Mauawatu (holders), which opened at the Sportsground yesterday, wa.s very interesting, for while the home team had secured the lead on the first innings, the margin is far from being a winning one. Marlborough’s total of 123 fell far short of what the supporters of the challengers ha.d anticipated after their splendid showing against Nelson in the elimination contest, but they were opposing an attack which was deadly throughout and which was operated very judiciously by the Mnnawatii skipper. However, the excellent crowd of spectators were treated to a. repetition of the position at Alanawatu’s visit, for several of the batsmen from whom big things had been anticipated failed. The outstanding features of the home strike were the. -solid, if unspectacular, knock by C. Mc.Vicar, the fighting effort of Norris, the homo captain, and the strike by N. Gallichan, whose stand at a critical stage carried Manawatn into the lead on the first innings-—an important position in view of the Hawke Cup rules where indifferent weather conditions bring a. contest to a premature halt —and very fittingly followed up his bowling effort. While Marlborough have lost one wicket for 10 runs in their second innings. there was always the possibility that their batting display would be of a higher standard to-day, which, would make Manawatn’s task of overtaking their total all the more difficult when they had fourth use of a wicket which, while it appeared to play truly, might well crumble. Resuming with five wickets down for 94 runs after the luncheon adjournment yesterday Auty, who had been not out with three runs against his name, was partnered by Goodwill, but, after contributing two Marlborough (challengers) and Manawatu (holders), to day. Auty, who had been not out with three runs against lvis name, was partnered by Goodwin, but, after contributing two singles, Gallichan tempted the latecomer out of his ground and Norris smartly lifted off tlie bnils. 996 —2. Hatch resumed the attack from the lower end and F. Crosswell, the incoming batsman, brought 100 up with a fast-run single. However, with five runs added, Cresswell snicked a ball from Gallichan into the hands of the ’keeper, Norris, and matters had taken a disastrous turn for the southerners.—los7—l. However, worse was to follow, for Robinson entered only to lift a hall from Gallichan over the bowler's head, where Pollitt brought off a brilliant running catch, the High School boy getting his hands to the leather as it dropped. The success gave Gallichan his fourth wicket at a cost of 25 runs. PLAY DESCRIBED. At 2.45 p.m. Auty, who had been batting away steadily, stepped out to a ball from Gallichan and. failing to connect with it, had his bails lifted. He had played steady cricket for his 18 runs. —11G —9 —lß. , . K. Robinson, the final batsman, joined Rowe and the latter signalled his arrival by driving Gallichan into the long field for a single. Twice in close succession Murchison appealed for l.b.w. decisions against Rowe, but without result. However, a single brought him facing Gallichan and the batsman deliberately stepped in front to plav a break ball with his pads to be ruled out l.b.w. The innings closed at 2.43 with the telegraph registering the mediocre total of 123, Gallichan winding up with an average of six wickets for 8(> runs. , At 3.5 )i.m. Murchison and AlcVicar went to the wickets for Alanawatu, the former taking strike to Goodwin and off the second hall of the over the batsman turned a ball to leg for a brace, while a no-ball was debited against the howler two deliveries later—the first no-hall of the match. Running a short single from a shot Tn the direction of point nearly brought about the dismissal of AlcVicar, who was a little slow to answer his partner’s call. A Robinson, a medium to fast bowler, came on at the lower end and Murchisou snicked him past the ’keeper for four, while he added a single before the over closed and four byes were added off Goodwin. Fast running between the wickets brought 10 runs up in 3 minutes. After running to 10 within quick time, the scoring rate slackened, two maiden overs following until _ AicVicar got Goodwin away for a single through the covers, while Alurchison turned the last ball of the over to leg for another single. A single to McVicar off. Robinson brought Murchison facing the trundler, and with his next ball the fast howler shattered tlie wicket— 20—1—11. , ~ Culter entered to play out tlie over and the only contribution from Goodwin’s next turn was four byes from two balls which beat both batsman and ’keeper. IC. Robinson relieved A Robinson at the lower end. and Cutler cut him down the gully for a single. Disaster overtook the home side when that usually fruitful contributor, Cutler, piayed forward to a hall from Iv. Robinson and the bowler ran up to accept a low catch —26—2 —l.

Norris, the home skipper, entered to turn the second ball lie received to square leg for a single. A double change in the attack was made by Cresswell relieving Goodwin at the upper end, a maiden over resulting, while Tv. Robinson kept AlcAGcar on the defensive in the the succeeding over. Tlie interval for afternoon tea nearly proved to be disastrous to Norris, for off the first ball after resuming he turned A Robinson to square leg where Hundleby juggled with the ball to finally drop it. Norris showed his appreciation by despatching the next hall to the. leg boundary. In Robinson’s succeeding over Norris scored braces from drives past mid-off and he added a brace to fine leg off the last ball of the over, bringing 40 up. Facing Goodwin. AlcVicar got the bowler a way to leg for four, the ball going over the boundary line, while in the same bowler’s next over he again found the line past long-on, which carried his total to 20. AVhile the scoring rate was far from fast, the runs came steadily, McVicar bringing 60 up from a short single to point. A snick to fine leg which passed to the boundary brought 69 up, the partnership having added exactly 50 runs. Goodwin, who had bowled unchanged for 12 overs, gave way to A. Robinson, a bye, two singles to Norris and a single to McVicar being forthcoming. FRUITFUL PARTNERSHIP CLOSES. The fruitful partnership between AlcVicar and Norris was brought to a close when Norris, in attempting to lilt a ball from K. Robinson to square leg. sent it into the hands of Cresswell. Tlie home skipper had contributed a valuable 23 at a highly critical stage.—73—3—23. R. J. Hatch succeeded him and he cocked the second ball lie received dangerously close to mid-on. Alaiden overs to O’Sullivan and K. Robinson followed, but at the former’s succeeding turn AlcVicar ran three from a snick into the slips, while the account was further swelled by four byes. Hatch, who had not appeared to be at

all confident, was beaten by K.'Robin-j son in his next over, die batsman i having only registered a single. —83 4 — l. Monteith marked his entry by running a single off the first ball lie re- ■ ceived, but with the total at 93 —one , run less than the visitors had had at the corresponding stage —McVic;ir stepped across to dispatch a lull toss from Goodwill only to fail to connect and he was ruled out l.b.w. file had batted 105 minutes for bis 32 runs, winch included only two fours. —93 5 —32. Alter surviving an appeal lor a catcli behind the stumps, Monteith cocked a ball from Goodwin into the hands of Barratt and retired with a modest four against his name. —94 —0 —4. With matters running badly tor the trophy holders, Galliehan joined fid Hatch and he sent an over-pitched ball from Bamitt to the stand railings. He brought 100 up in Goodwin’s next over by turning him to square leg ior a brace, the century having occupied 116 minutes. Racing A. Robinson, Hatch snicked a ball ro fine leg for four and added a single to miu off, Auty. who was doing good work in the field, coming across to halt tlie bait. Run-getnng was extremely difficult, and Manawatu were fighting with their backs to the wall; the batsman was very cautious as a result. Galliehan did open nis shoulders to one ball from Goodwin, but he failed to get on to it properly, the bail going high to leg for a brace, which brought lid up. Ryes for two and a brace past miu-on to Hatch saw the total creep forward, but with the telegraph reading 114 Hatch was given out l.b.w. to Cresswell. —114 — i—B.

M. Ongley entered only to mishit a ball into the slips to A. Robinson 'and return to the pavilion. —114 —B—o. Pollitt succeeded Ongley and the High tSchool boy opened Ins account by gliding tlie first ball he received to fine leg for tour, when he added a brace off the next, bringing 120 up. Galliehan added a single off the first bull of K. Robinson’s next over, while a single came to Pollitt when he returned the ball to the howler, who slipped and failed to halt it. A single through the covers to Galliehan brought the teams on terms and he carried the home team ahead with a brace to square leg. However, four runs later K. Robinson sent Pollitt back to the pavilion, the batsman playing forward to a ball which came in sharply to take his off pin.—l 29 9—i 7. Berquist, the last man in, played out the over, Galliehan declining to attempt a short single when the incomer turned the final ball to leg. A single to Galliehan brought Berquist facing the bowler and the latecomer registered a single in turn from a snick to leg, while Galliehan added another in the same direction. However, this brought Berquist. facing Robinson and the batsman turned a ball to leg to be nicely taken by A. Neal, leaving Galliehan unbeaten with 20 to liis credit. —132 —10 —1. K. Robinson was the most successful of a good set of bowlers in the visitors’ ranks, emerging with a bag of five wickets for 22 runs. WICKET GOES CHEAPLY. The home innings closed at 5.55 and 15 minutes later the visitors entered upon their second strike with Barratt and Cresswell. R. J. Hatch and Ongley carrying the attack, an immediate npepal against the failing light being unsuccessful. In Hatch’s second over lie clean-bowled Barratt with only three runs up, Barratt having failed to open his account. Hundleby entered to open his account with a single through slips. Murchison relieved Ongley, sending down a maiden over, but thereafter the batsmen played cautiously to be together at stamps, although the visiting skipper had a “life” when Cutler dropped a difficult chance in the slips in the final over.
