After carrying 9.5 to victory in the hack sprint on the opening day Pladie appreciated the drop to 7.10 as a result of his transfer to the open class on Thursday, and he gave W. J. Broughton another winning ride. Although Full Throttle was unfortunate in meeting such a good hack as Pladie in the Waimato Handicap, the Cockpit gelding fully maintained his consistency by filling second place to him. His two starts at liawera resulted in a third and a seoond. St. Clara, a five-year-old daughter of Cleasanta, who was a useful performer when racing in the colours of Mr It. A. McKenzie, of Milson’s Line, has displayed a happy nack of winning on a second da.y. After an indifferent showing on the opening day at Hawera, she captured the Inaha Hack Handicap on Thursday. GENERAL. Terry, who has been entered lor hor firßt raco in the Tyro Stakes at the Woodvillo meeting, is a threo-year-old daughter of Nigger Minstrel and the Quarantine mare Horcmoa, and she is owned by Mr W. H. Hume,' of Levin, who has registered his colours as black, gold sleeves and grey cap. Gaino Carrington lias been scratched for the Newmarket Handicap. It is understood ho will be retired to the stud to avoid the risk of his breaking down as the result of further attempts to prepare him for racing, says a Melbourne cablegram. Tentative arrangements have been made to send Cuddle to Australia for the autumn racing. Slio is to bo left in charge of S. G. Vvaro at Wiugatui after this weeks mooting, whilo her owner-trainer returns to Hastings with Sunny Maid. The latter will return to Dunedin in about three weeks timo and ship his mare from tho Bluff io Melbourne. It is also possible that Waro will go to Australia with some of the younger members of bis team. . ' Rex Victor, who ran third in the Waimangu Snakes, a weight-for-age event at the Rotorua meeting, is stated to have been one of tho finest-looking novices seen out at the fixture. He was always well up, being second into the straight, and lie’was going well at the finish. He is a four-year-old by King Lu from Allwin, being thus a full-brother to King Win. F.eeting Glanco has resumed active work in view of autumn and winter racing. Her trainer, S. Barr, is educating Battle Queen as a hurdler, and in some private schooling she lias shaped very encouragingly (says the l’ress). She ' 9 , a six-year-old by Paladin from Kai Arahi, by Tractor from Arai te Uru, by Birkenhead, so has everything on the breeding side to recommend her as a jumper. . Ono of the most disappointing displays at the Rotorua meeting was that of Coronis in the Borough Handicap. This filly had shown excellent form recently, winning at Thames and Takapuna meetings, hut at Rotorua she failed to reproduce it. She began well, hut soon Gritted. and finished last. Tho tact that tho going was cutting out badly may account for her showing. Sir Abb is a brown gelding by David, a fino stayer, from the Comedy King mare Vocal Princess. He is one of a batch of throe purchased in Australia as yearlings by Mr A. H. Long and is the only ono of the trio at present in training. Sir Abb is bred on staying lines, and his latest effort, although only over a mile, indicated that he is likely to do well over middle distances. His next outing will probably be in the Champion Hack Handicap at To Aroha and all going well in

the meantime ho should take a lot of beating. Poi Dance, who was making her first appearance for some months when she contested tho Mokoia Hack Handicap at Rotorua. displayed a lot of speed in that event, and it does not look as though she will bo long off tho winning list. She drew No. 1 at tho barrier, and, jumping away smartly, held the lead till half a furlong from home, where Lady Zinnia challenged her and beat her by a neok. Poi Dance battlold on, well under pressure and it was only lack of racing condition that brought about her defeat. Persian Lady, after her success in tho Midsummer Handicap at tho Auckland summer meeting, was thought to have a good show in the Arawa Slakes at Rotorua. She was last when, the field settled down, and the best she could do was to finish fourth. As several of her relatives handle greasy going well it is hard to account for this filly’s moderate showing. However, she has plenty of paco and should not be discarded on account of her effort at Rotorua.
