BETTER DOMESTIC DEMAND. GREYMOUTH, Jan. 23. The beneficial effect which the continuation of the building subsidy has had on the timber market in New Zealand was emphasised by Mr D. Reese in his opening address to the second annual conference of the West Coast Saivmillers’ Association. In common wi.tli the export side of the industry, the timber trade within New Zealand had improved considerably in the last 12 months, and it is stated by those in the industry that the increased activity in building following the introduction of the subsidy scheme by the Government has been chiefly responsible for this, said Mr Reese. “The bright conditions in the Dominion market are due in the first instance to the introduction of the subsidy scheme,” said Mr Reese. “The subsidy continues to give an impetus to the trade and is contributing very largely to the relief of unemployment.” Air Reese mentioned that the Government had assisted in the revival of the trade in another way by the reduction of timber royalties. ' The Railway Department had also assisted materially by a reduction of railage rates to ports of shipment. Mr Reese expressed the appreciation of the industry for this assistance and said the action of the Government and the Railways Department had in itself played a very important part in enah'ing millers to meet competition and bring about the favourable development which had taken place.
