EGG-LAYING

MASSEY COLLEGE CONTEST. The following arc flic results of the forty-third week of the Alasscy College egg-laying contest: — SINGLE PENS.

NOTES. (By “Brooder.”) With pullets well able to look after themselves and liens slowing down preparatory to the moult, time perhaps will now permit of a general clean out “Brooder ’ is often asked for a. good limewasb. Here is one used by many poidtryincn; it lias a dual effect, in that it is cleansing and also helps to wipe out for a time at leant the presence of red mite and other parasites which in test all poultry bouses: Slake enough lime, with boiling water, whilst hot, add some flowers or sulphur and kenosene. Bv also adding sheep dip or some other insecticide a preparation which can be used with good effect is made. Houses so treated should Go freed from red mite ior tiie rest of the summer at least, and the \\ ash will destroy many of the vermin’s eggs which would mature in tine course. A cleaning iu> oi the yards would not bo out of place'. The long drought we have been experiencing means that runs will be more or lees in need of a good clean out. A liberal treatment

with lime would he helpful, and when the rains come this would he well wash, ed in, helping the purifying work generally. Jf at all possible in the autumn, the run could he dug over and a green crop of some kind sown. This perhaps is the better wav to g.ve new lilo to a very lon 1 run. How to get green feed is the problem of most poultrymcn at present. Cabbage is scarce even fur use in the home, and for poultry it is well-nigh impossible to provide. Lettuce is running to seed everywhere and the glass on the runs, large and small, is burnt. Lt seems that poultrvmcn for a quick remedy will have to fall back on sprouted oats, lt iis not such a laborious process as some make it out to be; simply .soak enough oats lor at least two days and then spread out on shallow traps to about one inch thick. Keep them saturated each day, and if kept in a warm place, but away from the sun’s rays, green sprouts should appear in about a week. Oats, roots and sprouts should then be ied to the birds, and as each tray is emptied it should be refilled with fresh oats prepared as above. This method has been tried often with considerable success, the birds thus fed showing appreciation by improved condition and viekl. ! But this need not he the only i green feed thought of. "With the re-; turn of the rains which are bound to i come soon or later, a good sowing of J silver beet, winter cabbage and tire; like can be made. These wi'l aug-; incut, if not displace, the sprouted! oats, and thus the much desired vita-; min-hearing food will be forthcom-j ing. With many difficulties now out of j the way, the new Mamuvatu Poultry j Association should he able to forgo | ahead and prepare for the shows to | come. There will nobody to blame j now, the association having power to make or mar the success of any future activities. When the final agreement between the Manawalu \ssociation and the Federation of Cage Birds is reached there should be little in the way to prevent the former reaching the ; height of its ambitious, viz., to makej the Mnnawrtu Show tlv? leading one to j its kind in the North Island if rot inNew Zealand. j
