SHIP BUFFETED
OFF NORTHERN AUSTRALIA. WORST STORM IN MEMORY. A GOVERNOR’S CLOSE CALL. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received January 18, 10.50 a.m. DARWIN, Jan. 18. The worst storm in the memory of all the officers was experienced off the coast of tlie Northern Territory by the Burns Philp steamer Marella, which arrived at Darwin last evening two days overdue from the southern States. The wind blew with hurricane force all day on Tuesday and huge seas swept over the ship, smashing windows and doors, and damaging the cargo. The second engineer, Mr Renfrew, was swept along the deck by a wave and suffered severe head injuries. He was admitted to hospital on arrival at Darwin. A number of passengers received minor injuries. The Governor of Queensland (Sir Leslie Wilson) narrowly escaped being washed overboard. A passenger said the ship was hove to ajl daj' on Tuesday. All the officers and crew were on deck and on the bridge throughout the day and night. Frequently the passengers were thrown off their feet. Mountainous seas came over, flooding the cabins. Captain Donaldson said: The winds and seas were the worst I have seen. NEW SOUTH WALES FLOODS. BOY LOSES LIFE. Received January 18, 10.50 a.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 18. Although the northern rivers of the State are still Tunning high, a cessation of the rairi has prevented intensification of the floods. Large sections of country are under water at Boggabilla, and the Mclntyre River has risen above flood level, completely marooning the township. A boy was drowned in the flood waters at Gunnedali.
