RAGWORT MENACE.
MANAWATU COUNTY’S CONCERN. Stating that if ragwort was allowed to become established it would constitute a serious menace to the district, the chairman (Cr W. E. Barber), at the meeting of the Manawatu County Council yesterday, urged that effective steps be” taken for its eradication, as small patches had appeared here and there. Cr J. Boyce said that there was a potential danger in the Glen Oroua district and the position should be emphasised. The chairman said that under the new Act there was provision for immediate penal action where ragwort patches were discovered to be flourishing. Farmer's owed a duty to their neighbours to destroy this noxious plant, he said. Attention was also drawn by the chairman to the fact that lupins in some areas had been allowed to encroach too far on to roads, and should be cut back, as they scratched passing ears. That representations bo made to the Department of Agriculture on the spread of ragwort in the association’s district was a decision made at yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu and West Coast Dairy Companies’ Association. Several speakers said the weed was becoming a serious menace in districts about Levin.
