The Department of Lal>our wrote asking that the work being done on Lethbridge Road be carried out by piecework where it was l>eing done by relief labour. So far it was working very well. Later in the meeting the chairman referred to the fact that there were only a few men employed on the work at that point, and the cost of transport, which was borne bv the'county, was very heavy. The matter was left with the engineer to endeavour to place the men on work nearer Feilding so that the council would not have to provide their transport. The Post and Telegraph Department suggested entering into an agreement with the council as to each body bearing half the cost ot shifting telegraph poles when such work was necessitated by road alterations. —Hie council decided to enter into the agreement. The Main Highways Board advised that any road recommended for declaration as a main highway must he a legal road. —The letter was received The Public Works Department requested that a tally of vehicles on the roads be taken at Mackie’s Line, Ashhurst and Bunnythorpe. —The letter was received. The Unemployment'Board forwauled a schedule of rates at which relied workers were to be paid, the sca’e being the new one. —Referred to the engineer. Mr S. Sherrard. Makino, wrote asking the council to have the new road leading to his property gravelled. The chairman said that no undertaking had been given to Mr Sherrard that the road would he met idled after it had been formed. The engineer said that Mr Sherrard had metalled a certain portion of the road himself. — The council decided to decline the request; it is to he pointed out that the council had not at any time any intention of metalling the road. Mr W. T. Bailey wrote asking that further improvements be carried oir at the Ferry Reserve at the Gor p-. which lie held under a lease. —Cr. McDonald said that the council recog nised that Mr Bailey was spending a good deal of money on the reserve, but the property had lxe-en let as it was, and if Mr Bailey required tinland for a stud farm he should bear the cost of the extra improvements. Cr. Greenhow considered that on' fence could he improved by eliminat ing certain ang'e-stays which Mr Bailey said hurt the legs of foals. The council decided to reply that the erection of a cottage would be considered if the rent of the property was increased bv £ls a year, and that in lieu of Mr Bailey paying £ls on his share of a new road-fence he be allowed to spend a like amount on subdivisional fencing on the property the work to be done to the approval of the county engineer.
