LEADERS SUFFER REVERSE. CENTURY~TO ROSE. Pleasant conditions were offering when the mid-week cricket competition was advanced a further stage yesterday. Two games were presented at tlie Sportsground, and P.D.C. registered a surprise victory at the expense of Optimists, who had been on level terms with Ecilding at the head of the championship table. A splendid innings by Rose played a material part towards Combined Services registering a victory over Kiwi A; lie retired after lie bad contributed a vigorous total of 104. SERVICES v. KIWI A. Batting first against Services, Kiwi A opened promisingly enough, four of the first five batsmen entering double figures, while Brown entered at a late stage to run up 43, nine boundaries hurrying his total along. However, he received little support from the succeeding batsmen and he was still unbeaten at the close with the total standing at 166. By way of a contrast, matters ran badly for Services in the early stages, three wickets falling for eight runs, four for 14, and five for 38. Rose and Angus became. associated to advance the total to 139 before the latter was beaten, his figures including five fours and a five. Rose contributed the winning runs prior to being retired by his skipper at 104, his century including 15 tours and three sixes. With his departure the end came quickly, but Services had registered a threepoint win by a margin of eight runs. Detailed scores are : KIWI A. P.D.C. v. OPTIMISTS. However, the scoring then fell away and a. grand total of 128 promised to be well within the reach, of the competition leaders. A feature of the innings was the fact that not an extra was debited against ’keeper Oliver. Disaster overtook Optimists at their visit, tor only Jefferies and Cockburn proved capable of entering double figures, Whitehead accounting for four members at the low cost of eight runs, while Rodgers took three for 14.
