THE DESERTED VILLAGE.

PORT AWANUI’S FATE. Per Press Association, GISBORNE, Jan. 15. The removal of the police station at Port Awanui to Tikitiki marks another stage in the general drift inland on the East Coast, the principal recent movement of which was the removal of the Tuparoa Hotel and license to Te Puia Springs. A new police station will be erected at Tikitiki and it is probable that the Court formerly held at Port Awanui will be removed to ltuatoria.

Port Awanui was formerly a flourishing port of the East Coast and the main outlet for the Waiapu district. Now it is an almost deserted village, nothing remaining but an hotel and one store.
