THE HAWKE CUP

CHALLENGE BY SOUTHLAND. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Jan. 14. At last evening’s meeting of the Southland Cricket Association, it was decided to enter a challenge for the Hawke Cup, at present held by Manawatu. In the 1929-30 season a Southland representative team made the long trip north to Palmerston North in pursuit of the Hawke Cup, which was then held by Manawatu. However, the hopes of the southerners were doomed to disappointment, for Manawatu compiled the big total of 466 runs, in reply to which the challengers could only muster totals of 133 and 256. On that occasion L. Spring, who was later transferred to Christchurch, but who is now a resident of Auckland, compiled 106, while half-centuries were registered by O’Keefe (62 not out) and Norris (57). The team which did duty for Manawatu on that occasion was: A. C. McVicar, A. M. Ongley, A. Cutler, L. Spring, M. Ongley, L. Pacey, W. E. Norris, N. Gailichan, Baumber (Horowlienua) and M. O’Keefe. In the interim since Southland’s last bid for the trophy, the Hawke Cup has been in several hands, but it would be particularlv fitting should Manawatu (the present holders) again defend it against Southland. The order of challenges is determined by the New Zealand Council, and Manawatu will next be required to withstand the challenge of Hawke’s Bay, who read a very formidable combination on paper,—“Slip.”
