TE ARAKURA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) TE ARAKURA, Jan. 12. On Wednesday afternoon the Te Arnkura Women’s Institute held their January meeting in the ball. Mrs Griffith presided over a large attendance and extended a special welcome to the visitors present. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdamos Baxter, Glassford, J. IJ. Bennett? and Miss Baxter. After the usual business had been transactcd an interesting demonstration on the making of sugar-bag rugs was given by a local member, Mrs Thomas. A fine sample of this kind of rug was on exhibition, and was much admired. The points competition was for the best novelty not costing more than half-a-erown and was kindly judged by Mi6s Mathews. The senior class was won by Mrs Wilkins, Mrs Sorenson boing placed second, and Mrs Whisker third. The winner of tho junior class was Miss Benge, Miss Baxter second, and Miss Hansen third. The usual market stall was held, Miss Benge being in charge. A word competition resulted in Mrs A. Hume and Mrs Johnstone gaining tho prizes. Afternoon tea was shaved, the hostesses being Mesdamos Bradley, Sorenson, Binns, Wilkins, Griffin, and Burnham. It was decided to change the date of the next meeting from the 13th to the 20th of February. Members were reminded that the group meeting would be held at Ilalcombe in February. The competition for the next meeting will be for the best frock, five shillings being allowed for material, etc. Mesdames J. H. Bennett, Lewer, Firth, Johnstone and Misses Firth and Bennett will be the hostesses. A vote of thanks was accorded the judge of the competitions, tho hostesses, and Mrs Thomas for the demonstration. Another enjoyable meeting closed with tho singing of the National Anthem, Mrs Johnstone being the accompaniste for the day. The Te Arnkura Hall Committee met on Thursday evening to discuss arrangements regarding the forthcoming garden party. It was decided to send a letter of appreciation to Mr and Mrs J. Linklater for their very kind offer to place their grounds at the committee’s disposal for the party. The date for the function was fixed at February 13. Various stalls, games, competitions, etc., will be held. Full details will be advertised later.
The farmers were very pleased with tho recent rain, and the pastures have become greener already. The first mushrooms of the season having been gathered this week, no doubt they will soon become plentiful when the ground receives more moisture. Mr M. Melton, of Hamilton, is spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs Whittle. Mrs Chapped and Miss J. Chappell, of Hastings, are visiting Te Arnkura and are the guests of Air and Mrs Whisker, Cameron’s Line. Miss T. Lewer, now of Wellington, is at present at home with her parents. Tho friends of Mr and Mrs C. Avery, Cameron’s Line, will be pleased to know that their son Stuart, who has been seriously ill, is now improving.
