PRAYER OF RIVIERA.
ENGLISH TOURISTS WANTED
“Oh! If only the English would come again,” is the prayer of the Riviera, writes the Monaco correspondent of the Manchester Guardian.
There are many unhappy people in this traditionally happy land. “In Nice hundreds are starving, and everyone deplores the bad trade, largely due to the failure of English visitors to patronise the Riviera as in the past. This is despite ridiculously low prices. A room in the best hotel costs only half a guinea daily, and a first-class lunch ss.
“The magnificent new casino offers a tea dance for 2s 6d. The entrance fees at Monte Carlo casino have been reduced to 10 francs, and the lowest stake five francs, in order to compete with its neighbours, although the famous casino has thereby lost its reputation as the world’s greatest gambling resort.
“Germans do not come because the export of money from Germany is impossible. The only indications of the Russians who flocked here in dazzling pre-war days are in the pawnshops’ signs.”
