Squadron Leader T. M. Wilkes, officer commanding the Royal New Zealand Air Force, has been promoted to the rank of Wing-Commander. The Gazette notifies the appointment of Mr S. H. Dawes, of Palmerston North, to be a second lieutenant and posted to the 7tli Field Battery. The new territorial commander of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, Lieutenant-Commander F. Adams, with Mrs Adams, will arrive at Auckland next week. Mr J. H. Luxford,. S.M., former Chief Judge of Western Samoa, and now S.M. of Thames, is to visit Samoa on High Court circuit, arriving by the Maui Pomare on February 7. The funeral took place this week at Te Kuiti of Hatutaua Pukuhatu, of the Ngatimaniapoto tribe and one of the last of the great Maori chiefs. Pakuhatu, who was 93 years of age, had been connected with King Country affairs affecting the Native race, both before and since the coming of the pakeha into the district. He was closely associated with the Maori “king” movement since its inception and had supported no fewer than five generations of the line. His influence was_ so great that the “king” as far* back as “king” Tawliiao came to depend on him to a large extent on matters concerning the Native race.
