OUR AIR PORT.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Do we as citizens realise that unless we wake up and act we will stand a chance of being left lamenting? Granted we have an aerodrome. We also have a ’plane or two, an d know there are a few people who are keen on aviation. This is the position we are in whilst we read in the papers : (a) That the Government is voting large sums of money for the development of air ports, etc. (b) A company is being formed to conduct inter-island passenger services and ra - merston North is mentioned as a po of call, (c) That experts predict that ere long the Tasman will be flown There can be no doubt that the next few years will see wonderful changes and as citizens of Palmerston North we should be up and doing if our city is to take its rightful place in the development of aviation. Tor instance, a site for an aerodrome closer to the Square is essential and I suggest that the ideal location is_at the c 9 r £f r < " Boundary Road and Rangitikei Street Already the property owned by the Government and it could be made suitable by the utilising of some of the unemployed labour available. Palmerston North is an ideal centre for most utilities and for aviation it could be outstanding. We had here recently one of the finest air pageants yet staged in the Dominion. How many of us realised that a handful of local enthusiasts arranged that gr.at spectacle for us. The time has come in fact is likely to pass, for us to pull our weight as citizens to see that Raimerston North is adequately equipped to be a leading air port. Perhaps the Mayor will call a public meeting at which the matter can be fully considered and then if we decide to go to sleep we will only have ourselves to blame later on. . I shall be pleased to see further letters on this important matter, and feel sure the “Standard will provide the space for s »™|^YrcOMß.
