FEILDING MEETING.

PASSION FRUIT’S GOOD WIN. SANGUINE jKING CONSISTENT. THE TWO-YEAR-OLD SUPREMACY. • Although the early portion of the day was > somewhat threatening, a few light showers falling, the weather cleared and the Eeilding Jockey ■ Club was favoured with pleasant, conditions for the opening of its spring fixture yesterday. There was an excellent attendance and the totalisator returns showed an increase over the corresponding day last year, when the win and place system of betting was operated. The position was rather surprising in view of the fact .that favourites enjoyed an indifferent innings, it being not till the sixth event that a first fancy proved capable of fulfilling the expectations'of backers, while only two won during the day. The sum of' £9542 was handled as compared with £9427 last year, an increase of £lls. ' The ■ Feilding Cup was not a particularly interesting contest, there being no change in the running till the straight entrance where the field closed up for tho sprint home. Passiorr Fruit immediately ran to the front and went on to win with something in reserve from Rust, with Aga Khan, who had been the pacemaker, third. An incident occurred in the straight wherein Stitch, Rust and Red Rufus were involved, the last named being almost down, but, as in the case of an. enquiry into the running in the hack distance event, no information was supplied ter the Press as to the enquiry which was instituted. Hawke’s Bay also furnished the winner of the open sprint to thus account for the two principal events, Cullus taking charge early to stay there till tho close, winning nicely from Hunting Lodge and Porotiti. The Kiwitea Handicap—tho concluding event —saw the smallest field of the day produced, and it enabled Sanguine _ King to register his fourth successive win by defeating Pomp. Both have registered good performances on tho course in the past, but Sanguine King has been assisted to that end by the leniency he has been shown by handicappers during his career. Another two-year-old winner was brought into the discussions by the success of Pakanui over Severe, but while he might well improve, the Hunting Song colt hardly promises as yet to reach the first flight, although yesterday’s was his second win. Following are the races which were decided after the first edition of the “Standard” went to press yesterday:— CULLUS SCORES. The field in the Flying Handicap was weakened by the- defection, of Souchong and Royal Routine, who might well have commanded strong support. In their absence The Tiger was made favourite, but after racing prominently to the straight entrance he retired beaten. From an excellent despatch in which Inflation was a little slow to begin—the Paper Money horse was having his first start for some time —Cullus and The Tiger went out to set the face for Burnish, Porotiti and Hunting Lodge. There was little change along the back and across the top, but immediately the straight was reached The Tiger retired and Cullus drew away to win comfortably by two lengths from Hunting Lodge, with Porotiti a neck away. Burnish finished ,on to get fourth place, another neck back.

UNCERTAIN TWO-YEAR-OLD FORM. Another favourite had to submit to defeat in the Juvenile Handicap) when Pakaunui, the second elect, was early in the van to stay there to the close. Although Severe finished on tho better, Pakanui was still holding an advantage of a neck at the poet. It was yet another instance of the uncertainty of two-year-old form in the current ecason. Pakanui and Ilias were the smartest to begin and the pair raced to the front from Severe, Alchemic and Sergia. Pakanui gradually worked clear crossing tho top to turn into the straight ahead of Ilias, Severe, Sergia, Going Gay and Alchemic. Pakanui was still holding a commanding advantage inside the distance, but she weakened and was under the whip at the post, Severe having closed up the interval to a neck. A length and a half back came Alchemic, who finished on resolutely after having failed to secure a run in the early stages, the Lackham colt getting up to beat Going Gay for third place. A FAVOURITE SCORES. The defeat of favourites was halted in the Kowhai Hack Handicap, when Blackman was backed with great confidence. The judgment proved to be well founded for the Nigger Minstrel ge'ding won with something in hand. Miss Hushabye raced across from the outside position to join Eka Tere and the pair led a closely bunched field round the turn, Waipiro, Inveresk, Royal Banquet, Blue Boy and Blackman being next in the running. Going along the back Miss Hushabye worked to the front, but rounding the turn for home Blackman ran up to the leader and was actually in front as they straightened up. Boudoir moved forward with Blue Boy, and the latter finished well to get to within a length of Blackman, witn Mies Hushabye a similar distance back. Boudoir was fourth. A THRILLING FINISH. There was only a half-ticket separating Palm and Canopy on tho totalisator for the Fitzroy Hack Handicap, with Hatuma and Land Tax next in request, but it was the- latter pair which fought out the finish. It was only by the narrowest of margins that Hatumn won, but the honours of the race wore certainliy with him. Boon was the first to show out, but Land Tax arid Gold Gleam ran past to take up the running and the pair were well clear of Merry Way, Hatuma, and Secrecy as they turned into the straight, none of the other runners holding any prpspect of overtaking the leaders. Gold Gleam was

the first to weaken and Hatuma ran past him in pursuit of Land Tax. Slowly but steadily the gap was closed and right on the post Hatuma snatched victory by half a head, with Gold Gleam a length back. Merry Way was a good fourth with Silk Sox next. SANGUINE KING’S CONSISTENCE. Tho defection of Aiguille left six runners to contest the Kiwitea Handicap and the public selected Sanguine King as their favourite. The Acre gelding maintained his consistency by winning from Pomp. Sanguine King and Farmer began well to lead Peschiera on to the course proper, the pace being comparatively slow as they raced along the back stretch. Crossing the top Pomp moved forward and he threatened to trouble the favourite in the run home, but Sanguine King hold him off to win by a long nock. Peschiera was three-quarters of a length back with Sunny Sky ahead of Farmer. DETAILED RUNNERS. WAITUNA HACK HURDLES HANDICAP, of £IOO, second £2O, third £lO.
