QUEEN CARNIVAL.
DECLARATION OP POLL. The declaration of the poll in the queen carnival at 10 a.m. this morning again showed that the organisers of the various committees were endeavouring to ascertain the financial strength of their opponents, the position being:— ■ Pipers’ Queen (Miss June bcott) 1 Garrison Queen (Miss Beryl Oak-
ley) 2 City Queen (Miss Pearl Winiata) 3 Prom Monday next the declarations will be made daily, and in view of the closeness of the contest these declarations will be watched with interest. Each organisation is straining every effort to see its candidate at the top of the poll, although the treasurers of each committee refuse to disclose the state of their “reserve fund,” and it is impossible at the present' juncture to forecast the winner.
Tho contest for queen of the 1934 Carnival enters on its last week on Monday and concludes with a monster Paddy’s market and cabaret at the Empire Hall on Friday and Saturday next. Each committee is straining every effort to ensure that its candidate will bo returned at the head of the poll, and present indications are that tho contest will bo one of tho closest yet decided in the city. The object of this effort is a most worthy one, for it is doubtful if there are any so self-sacrificing as our local bands. It matters little the naturft of tho function, one of tho first organisations to be called on to provide the fun of the fair is one of the bands, often without any thought of reward despite tho enormous expenditure entailed in maintaining their organisation. Now those organisations find that they must call on the'r supporters for assistance, and they find that their appeal is not falling on deaf cars. The Paddy’s market with which the carnival concludes will offer an opportunity to all to add their mite to the effort, 'and the well-stocked stalls with which tho Empire Hall will be filled will enable all to obtain value for their money as well as assist tho candidate of their choice:
