QUEEN CARNIVAL.

CITY BAND’S SOCIAL.

The City Band held a social and dance in the Empire Hall last evening, and. although the attendance of patrons was not as large as expected, a very pleasant time was spent. The dances were interspersed with musical numbers, Misses Winiata and Kerehana and Mrs R. Akuira giving vocal solos, the Maori items being particularly well received, while Mrs Winiata’s Maori party from Levin gave a' much appreciated poi dance. Mr W. Adams carried out the duties of M.C., while a strong band of ladysupporters of Miss Winiata’s candidature in the queen carnival attended to the supper arrangements. PIPE BAND. One of the most varied and entertaining programmes ever submitted for the approval of local audiences will be staged at the State. Theatre on Sunday evening by the Pipe Band Conimitee. The committee has been extremely fortunate in obtaining the services of Fred Webber and his “Rhythm Rascals” versatile entertainers, trumpet player, pianist, and vocal numbers, featuring vocal trios and piano duets with two pianos: A 1 Webber, trumpet player and vocalist; Skeet Wasley, trumpet player; Jim Buctdey, saxophonist, clarionist and vocalist; J. Thompson, pianist; Maurice McKenzie, late of Palmerston North, the only member of • the band selected from New Zealand, saxophonist and violinist. In addition to popular local artists the committee has been extremely fortunate in obtaining the services of Miss Gracie Kerr, New Zealand’s leading olocutionist, who will present new humorous numbers; Mr A. L. Elston, of Wellington and late of the London circuit, who is famed for his talent as an entertainer and humorist, and Mr Ray Trewern the popular and versatile Wellington tenor. Mr H. Bell will' be heard on his xylophone, while Lois and Nell Watson (elocutionists). Miss N. Sutherland (soprano) and Miss M. Rawlins (piano) will also contribute items. Miss Wiggins and Mr W. Duckworth will present a piano duet; Mr J. Thompson, tenor solos and Miss L. Thompson soprano solos. Mrs Barlow will be the accompaniste. On Monday next a euchre party has been arranged to be held in Collinson and Cunninghame’s tearooms.
