KIWITEA COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Iviwitea County Council met at Kimbolton, yesterday afternoon, Cr L. T. McLean presiding. Also present were Crs F. E. Tappin, W. Hair, T. D. Wood, W. P. Shaw, F. O. Stack, J. A. T. Brown, J. T. Williamson, and N. V. Shannon. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Public Works Department advising payment of subsidy on maintenance of main highways in the county for the period July 9 to September 8, amounting to £317 7s sd. Received. From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, forwarding schedule of “thirds” accrued from Crown sections in the county for the half-year ending September 30, 1934.—Received. From the Public Works Department, advising that the Main Highways Board will be making a tour of portion of the North Island, and will be pleased to meet representatives of the council at the Borough Council offices, Feilding, on December 1. in order to hear any matters which they may wish to submit for consideration.—Crs Tappin, Stack and Hair were appointed to attend the conference on behalf of the council.

From the Waimairi County Council, with reference to the proposal to amend the voting qualification in counties by substituting universal suffrage for the present system, and urging the council to vigorously oppose any alteration to the existing county voters’ franchise.—Supported, the chairman stating that it was a matter of importance to local bodies.

From the Whakatane County Council requesting this council’s support to a resolution regarding markets for primary products and suggesting that steps be taken to effect trade treaties with foreign countries as well as preserving reciprocal trade arrangements with England.—Received. From the trustee, estate of H. C. Wilson, deceased, requesting permission to erect private telephone lines across the Upper Kawhatau Road.— Granted.

From Mr C. Smith, drawing the council’s attention to the condition of the road leading to his property in the Upper Kawhatau Valley.—Referred to the overseer. RATE STATEMENT.

The following statement' was presented on the county rate position:— General rate, 1934-35.—Struck, £4733 10s Id; paid and rebate, £1406 0s 7d: outstanding to date, £3327 9s 6d. Specials, 1934-35: Struck, £2646 2s 2d; paid and thirds, £567 18s 4d; outstanding to date, £2078 3s lOd. Hospital, 1934-35: Struck, £2OOI 16s 9d; paid, £605 19s sd; outstanding to date, £1395 17s 4d. Arrears (three years).—General: Outstanding at April 1, 1934, £1283 9s 9d; paid, £522 3s 7d; outstanding to date, £731 6s 2d. Specials: Outstanding at April 1, 1934, £364 19s Id; paid, £176 12s 6d; outstanding to date, £IBB 6s 7d. Separate (Hospital): Outstanding at April 1, 1934, £136 3s 9d; paid, £64 6s 3d; outstanding to date, £7l 17s 6d. Separate (Power Board) : Outstanding at April 1, 1934, £9l 3s Id; paid, £66 3s sd; outstanding to date, £24 19s Bd. The statement was adopted. BANK BALANCES.

The county bank balances were shown as under: —County fund, debit, £660 10s Id; employees’ accommodation, special loan account, cr., £26 9s lid; ditto, fixed deposit, £700; Kimbolton cemetery account, cr., £l9 15s lOd; land fund account, No. 2, cr., £97 10s Id; Waituna cemetery account, cr., £4 3s lOd; Rangiwahia cemetery account, cr., £9 5s sd. —Adopted. OVERSEER’S REPORT.

The county overseer (Mr F. H. Eggers) reported, inter alia, on the month’s work as follows: —Cheltenham riding: All sections of the main highways and the Cheltenham Cross Road have received frequent attention from the grader plant. It is necessary to cart out another 200 cubic yards of surfacing metal on the lower section of Kimbolton Road (No. 52 main highway). The roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work in cleaning out watertables and repairs to road surface; also assisting with the delivery of metal in the Kiwitea riding. Kiwitea riding: Road surfaces have been kept trimmed by the power grader. The roadman has assisted with the delivery of metal; also the work of cleaning out drains and watertables on Beaconsfield Valley Road. Two hundred and seventeen yards of maintenance metal have been carted out by the county trucks. Further carting of maintenance metal on this, section of the main highway is now in progress. Waituna riding: All:the new maintenance metal recently carted out on the section of the No. 377 main highway has been trimmed by the power grader plant. The roadman is at present engaged carting out a quantity of clay blinding on this section of the main highway; also assisting with similar work on the section of the No. 377 main highway. Pakihikura riding: The roadman has also attended to repair work on the clay section of the Mangapipi Road. As a cream lorry is making use of this section of road I would suggest that a limited quantity of metal be carted out to improve the worst sections. Ongo riding: The section of the No. 377 main highway has been kept in fair order _ by the power grader plant; also Williamson s Road West. Improvements by way of earth banking have been carried out near the Waituna township on No. 377 main highway. All work in connection with improvements to the cemetery grounds, Waituna, has been completed. The roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work on roads other than main highways in this riding; also assisting with similar work in the Cheltenham and Waituna ridings. Kimbolton riding: The roadmen have been engaged most or their time with the _ carting out of maintenance metal in the Kiwitea and Kimbolton ridings. The section of the main highways have been trimmed by the grader plant; also Branch’s Road. One hundred and seventy-four yards of mstntenance have been delivered by the county truck in the riding. Peep-o-Day riding : The usual maintenance work has been attended to by the roadman. Up to the 15th instant the contractor had delivered 222£ cubic yards of maintenance metal on the section of No. 52 main highway. This portion of the contract should be completed during the current week. Pakihikura riding: The section of the No. 377 main highway has been trimmed by the power grader plant; also about one mile of the Sandon Block road. The roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work throughout his length. A few yards of rough metal have been carted out to improve a bend on the Ohingaiti-Pemberton Road.—Adopted.
