MR JOHN SCADDAN.
DEATH AT PERTH. Received November 22, 10.10 a.m. V PERTH, .Nov. 22. The death has occurred of Hon. John Scaddan, C.M.G., first Labour Premier of Western Australia.
Born at Moonta (South Australia) in 1876, Mr Scaddan engaged in mining operations until he went to Western Australia in 1896. He became a qualified engine-driver. His first entry into politics was as Labour member for Ivanlioe in 3904, and he was returned unopposed at every succeeding election. In 1917 lie was defeated as Nationalist candidate at BrownliillIvanhoe, hut from 1919-24 was Independent member for Albury. He was Leader of the Labour Party in 1910; Premier and Colonial Treasurer of Western Australia. 1911-16; Minister of Railways, 1914-17; Colonial Secretary May-June, 1919 ; and held various portfolios . from 1919-24. He retired from politics in 1924 and became concerned iii the 'management of a motor business.
