EXCELLENT GOLF.

AMATEURS AT MELBOURNE. MELBOURNE, Nov. 20. Though dull, the weather was ideal for the quarter-finals in the amateur golf championship. ~ , , Playing brilliantly for a 60, the best round, so far in the Centenary championships, J. McLean (Britain) went to lunch 6 up on Payne. His is the best round recorded on the Metropolitan Cluh’s links, being two strokes less than the record held by Williams. McLean’s putting was amazing, and his play through the green perfect. Payne battled hard against terrific odds, but bunkers and tee failures wrecked his chances. Rae’s defeat was due to hooked shots, Smith taking the lead early and holding his position. Williams profited rather by his opponent’s poor play than by his own brilliance. Jackson frequently experienced bunker trouble. . . , Hattersley downed Scott principally by brilliant driving, though Scott s putting kept him'in a good position most of the way. In the semi-finals to-morrow Smith meets McLean and Williams meets Hattersley.

Results are:— ""J. McLean (Britain) beat H. R. Payne (Victoria), 12 and 11. ii. Smith (Victoria) beat A. v. Rea (Victoria), 4 and 2. H. L. Williams (Victoria) beat A. w. . Jackson (Britain), 8 and 6. H. W. Hattersley (N.S.W.) beat Hon. Michael Scott (Britain), ' 1 and 6.
