RAM CERTIFICATION.

OPERATION OF SCHEME. Per Press Association. MASTERTON, Nov.. 20. The scheme for the certification of Romney rams was brought into active operation last week, and the certifying officers, Messrs A. L. AA’heeler and L. N. Haggard, accompanied by members of the executive committee of the Romney Marsh Sheep Breeders’ Association, have visited a number of flocks in the AA’airarapa, Rangitikei, and Manawatu districts with the object of setting a standard to work to. The executive very soon arrived at the conclusion that for stud rams the standard should be fairly high, but that for flock rams only a medium standard should be adopted for this initial year in order to avoid putting a premium on a few special sheep, but it was decided to aim at gradually raising the standard year by year. To date approximately 3500 rams have been inspected and certified, and it is not only gratifying to the executive but it will also be of interest to the public to know that breeders aie accepting tbe principles laid down in fine spirit and unanimously approve ot the practical utility lines on which the executive has worked in setting a standard for the purpose of improving the quality of flesh and character ot the wool of Romney sheep.
