PEAK CONQUERED
ASCENT OF MOUNT GREENLAW. The last virgin peak in. the Arthur’s Pass National Park was climbed recentlv by Messrs A. S. Logan and S. Brookes, of Rangiora, who made the ascent of tlie low peak of Mount Greenlaw (6840 ft.), in the south-east corner of the park. Leaving Rangiora at 2 a.m. on a recent Friday, Messrs Logan and Brookes reached the Harper River at 5.30 а. Travelling up the Harper and through the headwaters of the Avoca they reached their base camp beneath the low peak at 4.30 p.m. On the Saturday they left camp at б. a.m., travelling up the east ridge, and after a rock and snow climb of five hours reached the summit of the peak. The descent, which was begun at 1 p.m., was made through snow and occupied one hour. Breaking camp they travelled twelve miles down the Avoca to the shepherds’ hut, where they spent the night, returning to Rangiora next day.
Messrs Logan and Brookes are members of the Rangiora Tramping Club, and Mr Logan is also a member of the Canterburv Mountaineering Club.
