EXTRACTS FROM “ STANDARD.” NOVEMBER 21, 1904.
Much comment had been occasioned by the passing of the Shops and Offices Act in view of the stipulation for general closing at 6 p.m. At a meeting of tho Manawatu Mounted Rifles held to discuss whether the corps should continue or disband, it had been decided to alter the parade night to see if that would bring forth an increased attendance.
A farm of 100 acres in the Kairanga district had changed hands at £3l an acre, and 310 acres at Lower Aorangi at £23 an acre.
Ten sawmills wore operating at Taihape and a new mill was opening at Utiku as the result of an order from Australia for 5)000,000 feet of timber. The Main Trunk Line had been officially opened as far as Taihape. Paul Kruger had bequeathed £25,000 to religious societies in Holland, said a message from Amsterdam.
