CABINET CHANGES

MR S. G. SMITH BEING APPOINTED. CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEES REQUIRED. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 20., The appointment to Cabinet of Mr S. G. Smith, of New Plymouth, will be made this week. While the Prime Minister (lit. Hon. G. W. Forbes) is unwilling to discuss the report that Mr Smith will take the Education portfolio from Hon. R. Masters, this change can be regarded as certain. As trade matters are becoming so important in view of the necessity to negotiate trade agreements with Britain and other countries, Mr Masters will prefer to concentrate all his efforts on his remaining portfolio of Industries and Commerce. Mr Smith’s return to the Ministry,. from which he resigned on the formation of the Coalition, causes a vacancy in the position of Chairman of Committees in the House of Representatives. This is filled by the vote of the House. The Government nomination is expected to be Mr W. A. Bodkin, Otago Central, who was Chairman of Committees prior to Mr Smith’s election. Another alternative nomination would be Mr W. J. Broadfoot, the member for Waitomo.

Mr Smith has had a long experience of educational affairs as a member of the Taranaki Education Board, of which he is chairman.
