JUSTICES OF THE PEACE.
MANAWATU ASSOCIATION MEETS Members of the Manawatu and District Honorary Justices’ Association held a well-attended meeting in Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s club-room last week, tlie president (Mr J. H. Stevens) being in the chair. Sixteen apologies for unavoidable absence were received. Resolutions of condolence were passed with the relatives of the late Messrs M. Cohen and E. N. x>udden, J.P.’s. It was decided to make representations through Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., for three-fresh appointments of justices including a well-educated member of the Maori race, provided there is no legal bar to such an appointment. It was found that in a printed list of over 3000 justices not one Maori name appeared. New members elected and welcomed were Messrs C. D. Fraser, P. S. Larcomb, F. C. Litchfield, C. L. Mowlem, J. H. Cruickshank, and J. T. Bosworth (Palmerston North) E. P. Badger and A, D. Donald (PahiaTwo members were appointed to visit every justice in the district during the summer with a view to obtaining enrolments. It rvas agreed that the insertion of the letters “J.P.” after justices’ names in the telephone directory was helpful to the public and should be made a general practice. Mr J. M. Gordon gave an interesting address. Remits for the meeting of the Associated Justices regarding the new coinage and the urgent necessity to enforce the laws relating to excessive speed and glaring headlights on motor-cars were discussed, and arrangements were made for the council meeting to be hold in February.
