SEVERE TREMORS.

IN NEW SOUTH WALES. SYDNEY, Nov. 19. An earthquake shock, probably the worst experienced in Australia, was felt in a number of towns in the southwest portion of New South Wales at 8 o’clock this morning, causing minor damage. The towns affected are Canberra, Gunning, Yass, Parkes and Bogan Gate. . 'Tremors were also reported in the metropolitan area. The seismograph needle at Riverview Observatory registered a swing of 21 inches. Reports arriving later from various southern towns state that one house tw'o miles outside Gunning was so severely damaged as to become uninhabitable. Many local residents and business people report cracked walls and broken crockery and furniture. Some families are afraid to return to their homes, ow'ing to the damage to the walls and roofs.

LAST NIGHT’S SHOCKS.

Received November 20, 10.20 a.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 20. The township of Gunning w-as rocked again last night by earthquake shocks, accompanied by subterranean thunder. They shook the district at intervals from 5 p.m. till midnight. A number of women ran frantically from their homes, but most of the residents were calm. Many chimneys were broken and there are fallen ventilators and leaking tanks all over the town. Most of the buildings are of brick or stone, and they show cracks of varying sizes.

SHOCK IN INDIA

CALCUTTA, Nov. 19.

An earthquake shock, the most severe for many years, shook the whole of Northern India at 8.40 o’clock yesterday morning and rocked Peshawar. The population was panic-stricken and remained in the open all day.
