EMBARGO ON STOCK.

LIKELY TO BE LIFTED

ACTION OF GOVERNMENT,

(Bv Telegraph.—Special to Standard.* WELLINGTON, Nov. 14.

The Government is expected to take action at an early date for the removal of the embargo on the importation of live stock from Britain. The question has been the subject of lively controversy for several years, but it came to a point with the recent recommendation of the Agricultural and Pastoral Committee of the House of Representatives that the direct importation of British live stock be permitted. This was endorsed by the House after a brief debate. Importations have been made in the past few years by the indirect process of sending stock to Australia, where they are quarantined, after which there is further quarantine observation on arrival m New Zealand. There is a serious shortage of good strains of pigs suitable for the export trade, while the developing of the business in chilled beef necessitates importations of beef cattle from Britain The lifting of the embargo, which can be done by Order-in-Council, is also likely to result in New Zealand pastonalists securing pedigree sheep, particularly Southdowns.
