OBITUARY.
THE EARL OF DESART,

The Earl of Desart, for many years Treasury Solicitor and Director of Public Prosecutions, who represented Britain at several important international conferences, died yesterday at the age of 80.
LIEUT.-GENERAL SIR H. WALKER
LONDON, Nov. 5. The death is announced of Lieuten-ant-General Sir Harold Walker, who temporarily commanded the _ New Zealand Brigade at the Gallipoli landing, and succeeded General Bridges in the command of the First Australian Division on Gallipoli and afterwards in Flanders.
Lieut.-General Sir Harold Bridgwood Walker, K.C.8., K.C.M.G., D. 5.0., was born on April 20, 1862. He was educated at Shrewsbury and Jos'. College, Cambridge. He entereu the army in 1884. becoming captain in 1891, major in 1902, lieuten-ant-colonel in 1908, and lieutenantgeneral in 1923. He served with the Nile expedition in 1884-85, on the Egyptian frontier in 1885-86, the North-AVest Frontier, India, in 189798, and in South Africa in 1899-1902. He served with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from 1914-1918, and was also in France and Italy. He was G.O.C. of the Southern Command in India from 1924 to 1928, retiring in 1928.
MU A. R. ORAGE. Received November 7, 9.30 a.m. LONDON, Nov. 0. The death has occurred of Mr Alfred Richard Orage, the journalist. His death occurred a few hours after broadcasting an address on social credit.
•Mr Orage, who was at one time editor of the New Age, was bom in Yorkshire in 1873. Trained as a teacher, he taught under the Leeds County Council till 1905, and rvent to London as a journalist the following year.
MR PETER HE YES. SYDNEY, Nov. 6. The death is announced of Mr Peter Heyes, formerly Commissioner of Taxes in New Zealand, at the age of 79.
Mr Heyes was a native of Launceston, Tasmania, and was born in 1856. Alter experience in a law office and in some commercial positions he became general manager of Messrs Boyd, Son and Co., Dublin, in 1875-82. In 1882 he came to New Zealand, where he held various accountancy and secretarial positions. In 1888 he was supervisor of the estate of E. and A. Isaacs, Auckland, and later entered the service of the Kauri Timber Company, Auckland, eventually becoming assistant general manager. In 1894 lie relinquished this position and became commercial accountant to the Land and Income Tax Department, a post he held for 10 years, until lie was made Commissioner of Taxes and Superintendent of Advances to Settlers. This post he held for some 20 years.
